A three-way media phenomenon in the recording industry, TV, and on film, Will Smith is beloved across the world. He is also young, ambitious, and grounded in a well-publicized celebrity marriage to his second wife, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Recognizing his musical interests early on, Smith turned down a scholarship to the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a hip-hop career as front man "The Fresh Prince" for his friend Jeff Townes, also known as D.J. Jazzy Jeff. The pair performed raps ready-made for mainstream consumption, and won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance for the song "Parents Just Don't Understand" (1988). Then Smith parlayed his fame into the six-year run of the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on TV (1990-1996), during which time he developed a solo career in music and enjoyed his earliest big-screen role in Where the Day Takes You (1992), and as a homosexual con artist in Six Degrees of Separation (1993).
