Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) is a talented actor with a demanding nature and stubborn temperament that have antagonized every producer in New York. Now no one will hire him. Michael needs $8,000.00 to produce a friend's play and to earn it, he dresses as a woman, auditions as "Dorothy Michaels" for the soap opera Southwest Generaland and wins the part.
