The Golden Globes were full of surprises tonight. The glitz and glam that usually takes over these awards shows, took a slight back seat as some not so familiar faces walked away with the coveted statue.
Let's take a look at the night from the beginning.
Jennifer Lopez presented to start off the show wearing a low-cut, gold, flashy dress. We at PalZoo , have given her the award for worst-dressed of the evening.
Kate Winslet is the first winner of the night for best supporting actress in a supporting role in a motion picture for The Reader. Kate looked beautiful wearing a classy, black dress. "I have a habit of not winning" she says completely flustered. " I still am in shock". She thanks her husband Sam for his incredible support and her children.
Sting presents best original song. As the camera sweeps over the nominees, Miley Cyrus feels it is fitting to stick out her tongue to the camera. Isn't she supposed to be dating a 20 year old?.
Bruce Springsteen wins for "The Wrestler".
Eva Longoria then presents the award for best supporting actor in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Eva looks beautiful in a long , strapless red dress. Tom Wilkinson wins for John Adams.
Laura Dern wins best supporting actress in a tv series, mini series or tv movie for Recount. Laura looked pretty wearing a nice classic looking black dress, but could do without the costume jewelry-looking earrings.
Hayden Panettiere and Zac Efron present the award for best actor in a drama television series. Gabriel Byrne wins for In Treatment. We like Gabriel Byrne but come on .... Hugh Laurie and Michael C. Hall?? This was probably one of the biggest disappointments of the night for us. We were rooting for Hugh or Michael. Oh well, maybe next year.
Anna Paquin wins best actress in a drama television series for True Blood. This one surprised us as well. Not saying anything against the win, but she was up against some big names , it was just a surprise , didn't think it would go this way.
Best animated motion picture was Wall-E. This one also was surprising. I think the movie is cute but didn't think it stood a chance against Bolt or Kung Fu Panda. Kung Fu Panda was our favorite out of the three.
Johnny Depp comes on stage to introduce one of the nominees for the night. Since when did Johnny Depp have an English accent? I know he's been living out of country for many years but an English accent? Isn't he living in France? Anyway, I guess you can do what you want when you're being paid $64 million for your next movie.
Demi Moore , looking fantastic as always, presents the award for best supporting actor in a motion picture. No big surprise here, Heath Ledger takes the prize. Although not the biggest Tom Cruise fan here, we thought he deserved this one.
Here comes our second worst dressed of the evening. Maggie Gyllenhaal what were you thinking? Wearing a leopard-kind of print , black and blue, cross-shoulder fluffy dress, she looked ridiculous. Especially when Laura Linney wins the award for best actress in a mini series or motion picture made for television and accepts wearing a beautiful mustard colored dress. Shining and glowing, she was stunning.
Elizabeth Banks and Seth Rogan present the award for best screenplay which goes to Slumdog Millionaire.
Alec Baldwin wins best actor in a musical or comedy for 30 Rock. He thanked his daughter.
We're giving our best dressed nod to Renee Zellweger. This even surprises myself, as I am not a fan of hers. Not a fan of her acting or the way she looks but have to say tonight she takes the prize for best dressed. She looked absolutely stunning in a beautiful , black, shoulder cut-out black dress. With a mermaid bottom and swept up messy hair, she looking nothing less than glamorous.
Next comes Megan Fox and Terrance Howard to present for best actor in a mini series or motion picture made for television. Megan Fox looks stunning in a thin strapped gold dress. Paul Giamatti wins for John Adams.
Glenn Close and Laurence Fishbourne present the award for best tv series musical or comedy. 30 Rock takes home the award with one of the funniest acceptance speeches of the night. Tina Fey hands the award to Tracy Morgan and he says, "Tina Fey and I had an agreement that if Barack Obama won, I would speak for the show from now on."
Slumdog Millionaire wins again for best original score in a motion picture, presented by Kate Beckinsale and Diddy.
Jane Kotowsky and David Duchovny then present the award for best actress in a tv series musical or comedy. Tina Fey wins for 30 Rock. This lady is hilarious. "If you're ever feeling too good about yourself you can go to this thing called the internet and find some people that really don't like you. I'm going to address some of them now..." She goes on naming some "usernames" on the web saying "You can suck it".
Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman present the award for best director in a motion picture. Danny Boyle wins for Slumdog Millionaire.
Sandra Bullock presents the next award looking very nice in a white, cross-shoulder dress with flowing layered bottoms. She handed out the award to Colin Farrell for best actor in a motion picture musical or comedy for his role in In Bruges. He seemed a little overwhelmed when he states "They must've done the counting in Florida."
Next Cameron Diaz and Mark Wahlberg take the stage to present the award for best actress in a drama motion picture. Cameron Diaz looked like she hasn't visited her hairdresser in months. She desperately needs a dye job on that hair.
Kate Winslet wins for Revolutionary Road and is completely beside herself with her second win of the night. Overwhelmed she thanks Leonardo DiCaprio and almost brings tears to his eyes when she tells him she has loved him for 13 years. She then thanks her husband.....and tells him she loves him too.
Okay , the next award. Mad Men wins over House and Dexter?? Being a huge fan of both of the latter this was a huge disappointment so we're not going to say too much more about this one except congratulations to the cast of Mad Men.
Susan Sarandon then takes the stage to quickly (they're now rushing them as they're running out of time) to present the award for best actor in a motion picture. And surprisingly Mickey Rourke takes home the trophy. A big surprise but it made us happy here at PalZoo. Mickey Rourke was a well respected actor back in his time. He has done some memorable performances. Did he deserve the award over Brad Pitt or even Sean Penn. Not too sure, but either way you couldn't not be happy for the guy as you watched him accept the award. " I would like to thank my dogs, the ones that are here now and the ones that aren't because when a man is alone that is all he has is his dog."
Tom Cruise is then rushed along, as was Sarandon, to present the last award of the evening for best motion picture in the drama category.
And again Slumdog Millionaire takes the trophy.
Slumdog Millionaire definately swept up all the awards tonight and the night was filled with some surprises. All in all the three hour long show proved to be a little boring and quick paced trying to fit in all the awards. The big names that everyone expected to take the stage....well that didn't happen. But at these awards, they all get to have a seat, have some drinks and socialize. Maybe throughout the evening, with all the star-mingling going on , a few more movie deals were made and some old rivalries were put to rest as the champagne was flowing freely.
We're glad the Oscars are just around the corner.
Until next year at The Golden Globes
I have been a Madonna fan for years. I grew up on her music and remember vividly when her first album came out. I have always looked at her as a strong woman and respected her for sticking around in the entertainment business , staying fresh and keeping up with the times. She is currently on tour at the age of 50, and in my opinion looks fantastic for her age.
With that said, I have to say something has been bothering me for days. I think it was last week I read in my newspaper that she was asking for donations from the public to build a girls' school in Malawi for underprivileged children.
Here is the letter you can find on her official website:
November 13, 2008
Madonna Announces The Raising Malawi Academy For Girls
To All My Friends,
I am really excited to share with you a new video message about a project that you can be a big part of: The Raising Malawi Academy for Girls.
WATCH VIDEO HERE http://www.madonna.com/raisingmalawi/
After witnessing the potential of Malawi's girls firsthand, I made it my mission to give them an opportunity to become their personal best. I hope you will share my urgency and make a donation today. Every donation counts toward helping impoverished girls to reach their full potential. And every dollar will make a difference.
Please visit: http://www.raisingmalawi.org/rm_girlsacademy.php
Thank you for helping me to bring education and opportunity to the girls of Malawi.
They are deeply grateful to you for your support, and so am I.
Although I think building this school is a great idea and I have read about the conditions in some of the schools in Malawi and don't want to take anything from the fact that this school is something that indeed would be beneficial, I do have a problem with the donation part. The letter is clearly about asking for donations, it gets to that point right away.
Here are some facts to ponder:
Madonna, 49, tops Forbes’ first-ever ‘Cash Queens of Music’ list of the highest-earning female musicians, after she banked $72m between June 2006 and June 2007.
In 2007 Forbes estimated her net worth to be $325 million.
Now here are some other facts:
The cost of building each 1500 square foot school is $18,000 from start to finish. RSI Youth has created a partnership with Building With Books; a non-profit organization that builds schools in developing areas of the world with great passion for education. A new 1500-foot , two-room schoolhouse is built and fully operational for a minimum of 3 years for every $18,000 raised.
The Youth of Religious Science International (RSI) has committed to the funding and completion of the building of 3 two-room primary schoolhouses in rural Malawi, on the continent of Africa.
As well, they have now committed to the same for at least 5 additional schools in 2008.
Now it is said that Madonna's last Confessions Tour made her a profit of around $70 million. Let's say the tour she is on right now, her Sticky and Sweet Tour, were to make her the same profit.
How many schools, costing $18,000 a piece, could she build (without donations) if she were to donate her tour earnings?
She is worth almost $400 million, she is currently on a tour that could net her another $70 million and she wants donations from the public to build a school........one school. Even if Madonna's plans involve more than the above $18,000, it is pretty clear that she could afford to do this on her own.
I wish Madonna the best in building this school, and the children of Malawi who seem to desperately need more schools or improvements in the current ones they attend. But, please just do it. Build the school. The money is already there, and they need the school. Don't wait on or ask for donations.
I will gladly stand up and applaud if you go ahead and build this school and ask for no donations.
