Conrad Murray Found Guilty Of Manslaughter

On June 25, 2009 the world was shocked to learn that Michael Jackson had died. He was only 50 years old and about to embark on a world concert tour that would include 50 concerts over 9 months. Now more than 2 years later, Jackson's personal doctor, Conrad Murray has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.Defence lawyer Ed Chernoff and prosecutor David Walgren addressed their closing arguments to the jury on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011. Walgren discredited the defence's key medical witness, Dr. Paul White, and called his assessment that Jackson must have died by his own hand "garbage science." He urged the jury to heed the scientific analysis of Dr. Steven Shafer, another leading anesthesiologist and colleague of White's, and conclude that Murray gave Jackson far more propofol than he admitted to police. Walgren displayed pictures of Jackson's children on a projector screen and told the jury that Murray had taken away their father, and was "criminally liable." Chernoff argued that

The trial of the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death opens Tuesday with a bit of star power and the one thing the King of Pop enjoyed throughout his life — a worldwide audience. The case will enter a crucial final act in a packed Los Angeles courtroom with opening statements and the start of testimony. Jackson's family, including his parents and many of his siblings, are expected to be present as dozens of reporters cover the case. Proceedings also will be televised and broadcast online. While much is known about Jackson's June 2009 death, the trial will reveal new information and provide a detailed record of the singer's final hours. Dr. Conrad Murray's trial is expected to be the first time that the public hears — in the defendant's own words — his account of what happened in the bedroom of Jackson's rented mansion.By Monday evening, 15 satellite trucks and news vans were parked within a block of the courthouse.Prosecutors plan to call the pop superstar's friend and choreog

Lawyer Says Michael Jackson Desperate Over Finances Caused Own Death

A defence lawyer for Michael Jackson's doctor said Wednesday the singer was so anguished about his deteriorating finances in his final days that he took desperate actions that caused his own death. The statements by attorney Edward Chernoff came during a pretrial hearing in the case of Dr. Conrad Murray, who has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death.Chernoff was asking to see Jackson's financial records to prove a key defence theory."The crux of the defence is going to be that Michael Jackson engaged in a desperate act and took desperate measures that caused his death," Chernoff told Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor. "We believe at the time Michael Jackson died he was a desperate man in relation to his financial affairs."Deputy District Attorney David Walgren accused the defence of trying to distract from the main issue of the trial — whether Murray acted with gross negligence when he gave Jackson the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives on the day he

3rd Witness Testifies In Michael Jackson Hearing

Prosecutors called a third witness Thursday who described frantic efforts by the doctor charged in Michael Jackson's death to gather medication from the floor of the bedroom where the singer died after receiving intravenous doses of a powerful anesthetic.Paramedic Martin Blount testified at a preliminary hearing that Dr. Conrad Murray scooped up three vials of the painkiller lidocaine moments after the doctor said he hadn't given the superstar any medications. In addition, Blount and Richard Senneff, another experienced paramedic, said Murray never mentioned giving Jackson the anesthetic propofol and told them the singer lost consciousness moments before an ambulance was called. Both witnesses thought the singer was dead by the time they arrived at his mansion on June 25, 2009.Authorities contend Murray gave Jackson a lethal dose of propofol and other sedatives then tried to conceal his actions by hiding the medications and not telling paramedics and emergency room doctors about the dru

Hearing To Start - Michael Jackson Doctor Going To Trial?

Prosecutors are set to unveil their case against the man hired to look after Michael Jackson's health during rehearsals for his comeback tour as a judge determines whether the doctor should stand trial in the superstar's death.Jackson's family and fans are expected to attend the hearing, which begins Tuesday with testimony from police, a coroner and medical experts about their search to find what killed Jackson and whether Dr. Conrad Murray was responsible. In spite of an autopsy report attributing his death to acute intoxication of a powerful anesthetic complicated by other sedatives, the circumstances of Jackson's death are mysterious.Prosecutors have suggested that Murray's lawyers will blame Jackson, claiming he may have injected himself with the fatal dose of propofol. But that issue is unlikely to arise until trial. The guardians of Jackson's legacy will be watching as the hearing focuses on the star's drug use. Executors of his estate have spent the last year and a half since his d

Michael Jackson Album Gets Dec Release

A new album of previously unheard Michael Jackson songs will be released on December 14, the first such release since the pop star died last year, his Sony Music label said on Thursday.Called simply "Michael," the album marks the latest commercial venture by Jackson's estate since the "Thriller" singer succumbed to a fatal overdose of prescription drugs in June 2009, aged 50. But apart from revealing the album's title, regal artwork, and the name of one track, "Breaking News," Sony Music is keeping a firm lid on the project. A spokeswoman declined to say how many tracks were on the album, reveal any other song titles, or indicate the extent of production work that was done after Jackson's death. The secrecy follows an embarrassing debacle last year when "This Is It," a new Jackson single touted as his first posthumous release, turned out to have been first recorded 18 years earlier under a different title by an obscure Puerto Rican singer. The song's co-writer, Paul Anka, threatened to

Judge Declines Jackson Wrongful Death Case

A wrongful death lawsuit filed by Michael Jackson's father will now be handled by a state court after a federal judge said Monday he didn't have authority to hear the case and that the singer's father would be unlikely to collect tens of millions of dollars in damages if it remained in his court. Joe Jackson's attorney agreed to dismiss part of his case against the doctor charged in the pop superstar's death, which prompted the judge to rule that the remaining issues had to be heard in state court. U.S. District Judge John F. Walter opened a hearing Monday by telling Joe Jackson's attorney that he didn't think Jackson's father could receive any money from one of the major causes of action, which alleged the singer's rights were violated under the Americans with Disabilities Act. "I am firmly convinced that you can't seek damages on this (disabilities act) cause of action," Walter said. The judge said that was the only federal issue in the case and he would not handle any other issu

An auction of some 100 items of Michael Jackson memorabilia has fetched more than $1 million, with a basketball autographed by the late singer and Michael Jordan netting $245,000. Showing the lingering appeal of the "King of Pop," the sale Saturday in the southern Chinese city of Macau drew bidders from around the world. An unidentified Internet bidder paid $180,000 for a black crystal-studded glove and an arm brace Jackson wore while filming a promotional video for his 1995 album "HIStory." An Internet bidder also bought the basketball. Of the 435 total items up for sale, other non-Jackson items sold included a costume worn by Bruce Lee during the filming of "Game of Death" and a costume Madonna donned during her Girlie Show world tour.
