Coldplay and Lil Wayne received accolades as expected, but Robert Plant and Alison Krauss surprised as the big winners at the 51st annual Grammy Awards Sunday night, broadcast live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. British pop-rockers Coldplay came out strong, taking trophies for rock album of the year for the album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, and song of the year. “We’re not, of course the heaviest of rock bands,” said singer Chris Martin, in accepting the album award. “We’re like limestone — softer, but just as charming.” The band also performed live during the show. Martin began by sitting at the piano for the anthemic ballad Lost, and was joined halfway through by rap star Jay-Z. The band hasn't deigned to do live U.S. TV since 2000 - and despite already having a couple of Grammys in their trophy case (alternative album gongs for OK Computer and Kid A), they've never played at the awards show. There's no word yet what's in store for the band's performance, but by Frank Sinatra's holographic ghost, please don't let it be a gimmicky duet. Nearly every other act on the bill will be teaming up with another nominee for a "very special" Grammy moment.Jay-Z, West and T.I. are expected to perform their best rap song contender, "Swagga Like Us." T.I. is also scheduled to do a to-be-announced number with Timberlake. As for McCartney, he'll be getting a little help from "special guest drummer" Dave Grohl
