Bruce Willis Sporting Shades Bruce Willis Actor - Bruce Willis Bruce Willis In Die Hard

One-time stutterer turned movie star, the ex-husband of Demi Moore is also father to three daughters, a political lightning rod, and a recording artist ("Respect Yourself"). Bruce Willis was born on a U.S. military base in Germany. Upon his father's discharge, the Willis clan, eventually numbering four children, settled in New Jersey, where the young Willis discovered the joy of stage performance in high school.

Following graduation, he worked in a factory before discovering music. He played harmonica for a time and returned to acting, never graduating college, and finally ended up in New York where he tended bar to make ends meet. He enjoyed a breakout role on TV as David addison in Moonlighting (1985-1988). Although on set disputes with costar Cybill Shepherd were legion, he emerged an Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner with a few big-screen credits (Blind Date, 1987; The Return of Bruno, 1988) and one largely unexpected hit. Die Hard (1988) dropped on unsuspecting audiences and transformed the small-screen wiseguy into a true icon of the silver screen: his working-class hero cop John McClane delighted audiences with a return to old-fashioned adventure.

For a while Willis was box-office gold (Look Who's Talking, 1989), and even a self-consciously serious actor (In Country, 1989). Yet two flops, The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990) and Hudson Hawk (1991), proved how mercurial audiences can be, despite having earlier lavished great love on a star. In 1994, Willis had his second of three star turns when he eschewed the normal Hollywood trappings to appear in Pulp Fiction. The risk proved magical and led to his resurgent appeal in Twelve Monkeys (1995), The Siege (1998), and Armageddon (1998). In 1999, he had his third star turn with a critically acclaimed role in M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense. Having settled into postdivorce bachelorhood with a return to the stage (True West, 2002), an Emmy Award-winning TV role (Friends), and more voice-over work (Over The Hedge, 2006), Willis seems back on top in his middle years, making some unusual choices (Sin City, 2005) mixed in with the mainstream fare.

I'm much more proud of being a father than being an actor.

You can't undo the past... but you can certainly not repeat it.
