Yves Montand in The Wages Of Fear Yves Montand Marilyn Monroe and Yves Montand

"A handsome electrician sent out by the management to apologize for the absence of the star" was how English theater critic Kenneth Tynan described Yves Montand. This is quite apt considering Montand's breakthrough role was a disillusioned driver of a nitroglycerine truck in the French thriller Le Salaire de la peur (1953) (Wages of Fear). His career later led to a variety of roles, yet his character tended to side with the common man, often taking a political stance. This is evident in such movies as Z (1969) and I...comme Icare (1979) (I as in Icarus), in which he played respectively an assassinated politician and a rogue investigator from a Warren Commission-like entity.

Montand was born in Italy. His peasant family immigrated to France soon after his birth, and he was raised in Marseilles. He started out in showbiz as a music hall singer and, in 1944, was discovered by Edith Piaf in Paris. The chanteuse made him part of her act and the pair became lovers.

An early role in the film Les Sorcieres de Salem (1957) (The Crucible), based on Arthur Miller's Pulitzer Prize-winning play comparing McCarthyism to the Salem witch trials, led to Montand's being cast opposite Marilyn Monroe in Let's Make Love (1960). Relationships with both Monroe and Hollywood were short lived, however. Back in France, Montand declined from Jean-Pierre Melville's Le cercle rouge (1970) (The Red Circle) to more common crime thrillers before being internationally rediscovered in one of his last roles, as the embittered wine farmer in Claude Berri's twin movies, Jean de Florette (1986) and Manon des sources (1986) (Manon of the Spring). He was married twice, first to the French actress Simone Signoret, until her death in 1985, and second to his then-assistant, Carole Amiel.

"I think a man can have two, maybe three affairs...But three is the absolute maximum."
