Justice of the Peace Melvin Bush (Victor Moore) performs a series of weddings without realizing that his new license has not yet become valid. When the error is discovered, five couples receive letters informing them that they are not legally married. Among them are Jeff Norris (David Wayne) and his “wife”, Annabel (Marilyn Monroe), who is the reigning Mrs. Mississippi. Annabel has been spending more time parading her charms in a swimsuit than taking care of her husband and baby. Jeff is delighted by the letter because this means she is no longer eligible for the Mrs. America contest, but his celebration is cut short when Annabel happily announces that she is now in the running for the title of Miss Mississippi!

The movie consisted of five separate episodes, each focusing on one of the hapless couples who discover they are not really wed.

The story is from Gina Kaus's and Jay Dratler's unpublished work "If I Could Remarry" .

Insecure Marilyn refused to shoot a scene unless Natasha Lytess was allowed on the set to assist her. “Her habit of looking at me the second she finished a scene was to become a joke in projection rooms”, Lytess later revealed.
