One of the most popular and influential dramas of the late 1990s and early 2000s appeared on a premium cable channel, seen in only about one-third of U.S. television homes. Despite its limited distribution, ‘The Sopranos’ sometimes drew larger audiences than programs running opposite it on the broadcast networks and it won far more awards (including several Emmys). Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) was the cunning but conflicted boss of the northern New Jersey Mafia. A big, grinning bear of a man, he was by turns genial, a worried father and a murderous thug. The drama came from the conflict between Tony’s two dysfunctional ‘Families’, one personal and the other professional and the show’s unusual mixture of introspection and psychological tension, interspersed by occasional flashes of intense violence.

At Tony’s opulent suburban home was his loyal but ambivalent wife, Carmela (Edie Falco); his resentful teenage daughter, Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler), a straight-A student embarrassed by the family business; and his adoring but uncommunicative son, Anthony “A. J.” Soprano Jr. (Robert Iller). His crime empire was run out of the Bada Bing Club, a local strip joint that he owned. Among his most loyal soldiers were old-school enforcer Paulie “Walnuts” Gualtieri (Tony Sirico); somewhat dense Silvio Dante (Steven Van Zandt); hefty, friendly Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero (Vincent Pastore); and green young nephew Christopher Moltisanti (Michael Imperioli). When the series began, Tony was still a capo, but the old boss, Jackie Aprile, was on his deathbed. Tony and the other capos decided that Tony (whose father, Johnny Boy Soprano, had once been boss) should take over. This did not sit well with his father’s older brother, Corrado “Uncle Junior” Soprano (Dominic Chianese), however and a power struggle ensued. In the course of the 1999 season, Uncle Junior plotted with Tony’s bitter, ill mother Livia (Nancy Marchand) to order a hit on Tony; and henchman Jimmy Altieri (Joe Baldalucco Jr.) was discovered wearing an FBI wire and was killed. Tony’s problems with his scheming family, as well as home problems with a resentful wife and rebellious kids, drove him to see a shrink, the beautiful and understanding Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco). Melfi soon learned Tony’s real occupation, but due to her fascination with him could not let go.

During 2000 Uncle Junior was jailed on a RICO charge; unstable long-lost sister Janice (Aida Turturro) flew in from Seattle to cause trouble, plotting with Jackie Aprile’s brother Richie (David Proval) to overthrow Tony (Janice later killed Richie); trusted soldier Pussy ratted to the FBI and was whacked; and there was a failed hit on Christopher.

In 2001 the FBI made a major effort to get Tony, bugging his home, but failed. There were more problems at home with Meadow and A.J. and Tony’s psychiatrist, Melfi, was brutally raped. (She tried to hide it from Tony, knowing what he would do). Drunken, out-of-control Ralph Cifaretto (Joe Pantoliano) took over Richie’s businesses, causing more grief and a confrontation with Tony. Livia finally died, full of hatred and bile for her family.

The following year saw Uncle Junior tried and acquitted (they fixed the jury) and Tony finally took care of the Ralph problem by brutally killing him. Carmela was increasingly despondent over her empty marriage to Tony. First she lusted for his handsome driver, Furio Giunta (Gederico Castelluccio) who was promptly shipped back to Sicily; then, having had enough of his mistresses including Adriana Le Cerva (Drea de Matteo), she threw him out of the house and demanded a divorce.

After a long separation Tony eventually reconciles with Carmela, setting her up in the construction business to keep her busy. The fifth season (2004) also saw a war for control of the New York mob after the death of its boss, with Tony becoming involved when his fresh-out-of-prison cousin Tony Blundetto (Steve Buscemi) killed one of its soldiers. Rather than turn Blundetto over to Johnny Sacramoni’s (Vincent Curatola) New Yorkers to be tortured and killed, Tony had him killed. He also had to deal with treachery within his own organization when Christopher’s girlfriend, Adriana turned FBI informant; Tony had her killed in the woods by one of his soldiers.

After a gap of two years, the sixth season began dramatically in early 2006 with an increasingly senile Uncle Junior shooting Tony in the abdomen; Tony went into a long coma where he dreamed of a different life. Christopher married new girlfriend Kelli, who was pregnant, but relapsed into drug use. Johnny Sack was imprisoned by the feds, putting the New York mob under the control of Phil Leotardo (Frank Vincent), who immediately got into a spat with Tony over Vito Spatafore (Joseph R. Gannascoli), a former New Jersey cap who was revealed to be gay. When Tony delayed having Vito killed Phil sent hit men to New Jersey to do the job, setting up a possible confrontation between the two crime families. Tensions simmered through the last season, during which Tony killed an increasingly unstable Christopher at the scene of an accident. In the last two episodes war broke out with the New York mob; brother-in-law Bobby was killed; Silvio was shot and in a coma; Phil was killed in retaliation; and Tony, who was about to be indicted by the feds, appeared about to be targeted for a hit while at a diner with his family when the screen went dark.

The "Bada Bing" strip club is actually a go-go bar in Lodi, NJ, called Satin Dolls. It used to be a nightclub called Tara's. Before that it was a diner called Hearth 17.

In January 2000 the Coalition of Italian-American Associations issued a joint statement condemning the show for perpetuating negative Italian-American stereotypes.

The Sopranos live at 633 Stag Trail Road, North Caldwell, New Jersey. The house used in exterior shots is actually located at 14 Aspen Drive in North Caldwell.

Anthony 'Tony' Soprano Sr.: A wrong decision is better than indecision.

Silvio Dante: You're only as good as your last envelope.

Anthony 'Tony' Soprano Sr.: If you can quote the rules, then you can obey them.

Anthony 'Tony' Soprano Sr.: Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Christopher: Fear knocked on the door. Faith answered. There was no one there.

The best series on television are those in which two opposite things are true at the same time, and "The Sopranos" is a perfect example: it has exhausted the material and remains amazingly fresh. It's very funny, except that it is also dead serious. Reviewed by Alessandra Stanley of the New York Times.

Unlike most other "mob-themed" TV or movie viewing, this series actually represents characters who struggle and are often at odds with with a range of urban/suburban issues, as well as with their own cultural mores. The viewer gets a window into the internal life of the characters, and sees more clearly the motivations of their sometimes contradictory behavior.
