Steven Soderbergh with his Academy Award Brad Pitt,Steven Soderbergh Steven Soderbergh Behind The Camera

A part of you has to be scared, it keeps you alert; otherwise you become complacent.

If you're sitting around thinking what other people think about your work, you'll just become paralysed.

I'm process-driven, I'm not result-driven.

Even with a trained actor it's dangerous to get them thinking too much. You don't want them thinking, you want them doing.

Director Steven Soderbergh was the son of Mary Ann (née Bernard) and Peter Andrew Soderbergh.

His family moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana when he was a child, where his father, Peter Soderbergh, was a professor and the dean of the College of Education at Louisiana State University.

While the family resided in Baton Rouge, his mother appeared regularly on a local ABC-affiliate's (WBRZ-TV/broadcast channel 2) early-morning show ("2une In") as a "call-in" psychic, and taught adult-education and "alternative education" classes in "parapsychology" at LSU.

While still in high school, around the age of 15, Soderbergh enrolled in the university's film animation class and began making short 16-millimeter films with second-hand equipment.

After graduating high school, he went to Hollywood, where he worked as a freelance editor.

Shortly thereafter, he returned home and continued making short films and writing scripts.

Soderbergh claims to not be a fan of possessory credits, and prefers not to have his name front and center at the start of a film.

He often acts as his own cinematographer under the pseudonym "Peter Andrews".

He was elected first vice president of the Directors Guild of America in March 2002.

On Monday, April 5, 2009, Soderbergh appeared before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, and "cited the French initiative in asking lawmakers to deputize the American film industry to pursue copyright pirates," indicating he supports anti-piracy laws and Internet regulation.

He has acknowledged that he fathered a baby girl born in 2010 with an Australian woman named Frances Anderson despite being married to Jules Asner.

Turned down the offer to direct Quiz Show (1994).
