Actress Sophia Loren Sophia Loren A Young Sophia Loren Sophia Loren In Lingerie

In her heyday, Sophia Loren was considered to be one of many natural Italian beauties of humble origin, untouched by artifice and foreign glamour, a star who was at the heart of the Italian nation from her impoverished beginnings near Naples, which she often recounts, through to her high-profile international reputation with a five-film contract at Paramount Pictures and a Best Actress Oscar for La ciociara (1960) (Two Women). A national poll in the 1980s also revealed Loren to be Italy's most important icon, and an attempt was even made to erect a giant statue in her honor near her Neapolitan hometown.

Along with Claudia Cardinale, Loren started her career in beauty contests, where she was quickly noticed by movie producers - in her case by Carlo Ponti, whom she later married. Early on, she had numerous uncredited roles, and can be briefly glimpsed as a slave girl in Quo Vadis (1951) while still in her teens. Loren was also a popular model in Italian photo-story magazines. Her first notable role was in the operatic Aida (1953), although her singing voice was dubbed, but it was in the late 1950s and the 1960s that her fame became truly international, with numerous starring roles opposite Hollywood leading men, from Cary Grant in Houseboat (1958) to Marlon Brando in A Countess from Hong Kong (1967).

However, it was through Loren's collaboration with esteemed Italian director and actor Vittorio de Sica that her reputation was secured, not so much as one of cinema's most beautiful stars (that was already proven), but as a serious and versatile actress whose body might be international but whose heart belonged only to Italy. Her role as the pizza girl (la pizzaiola) in L'oro di Napoli (1954) (The Gold of Naples), one of her most cherished among Italian audiences, and her impressive performances alongside Marcello Mastroianni - the pair made 13 films together - as three different characters in leri, oggi, domani (1963) (Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow) are career highlights. Her last reputable movie role, in which she wears a monstrously oversized hat (symbolic of her stardom?), is in Robert Altman's Pret-a-Porter (1994).

Sophia Loren set the standard of beauty against which all other stars of the period were measured. A term was even coined in Italy to describe Loren and her peers, such as Gina Lollobrigida, as new postwar embodiments of female stardom, defined by the presence of the body as having a star quality all its own. This term was maggiorate fisiche, meaning physically and very amply endowed. Loren was modest about her glorious physique, claiming, "Everything you see, I owe to spaghetti." Her beauty endures to this day: Loren features in the 2007 Pirelli calendar at age seventy-two.

"Everything you see, I owe to spaghetti."

Sex appeal is 50% what you've got and 50% what people think you've got.

She served 18 days in prison in Italy in 1982 for tax evasion.

Suffered from stage fright and, therefore, never appeared in a theatrical production.

Godmother of Drew Barrymore.

Turned down starring roles on the TV series "Dynasty" (1981) and "Falcon Crest" (1981)
