Sissy Spacek In Coal Miners Daughter Sissy Spacek Sissy Spacek With Her Academy Award

Sissy Spacek attended Quitman High School, where she was named homecoming queen, presaging the role she would eventually famously play in the classic horror movie Carrie (1976) about a disturbed teenage girl with telekinetic powers. She first became interested in acting when she was visiting her cousin, actor and Hollywood heartthrob Rip Torn, and after graduating, "Sissy" (her childhood nickname) moved to New York to stay with him. There she hung out and had a bit part in Andy Warhol's cult movie Trash (1970). She tried careers in both modeling and singing before joining the Actors Studio, where she studied under the legendary Lee Strasberg.

A versatile, gifted actress, her first Hollywood role was in Michael Ritchie's Prime Cut (1972), in which she played a young girl drugged, kidnapped, and about to be sold into white slavery. But it was her performance in Terrence Malick's Badlands (1973), in which the then twenty-four-year-old actress played an introverted, disturbed fifteen-year-old on a crime spree with her boyfriend, that she first gained critical notice. By the end of the decade whe would win an Academy Award for Best Actress for Coal Miner's Daughter (1980), a dramatization of the life of the country singer Loretta Lynn. She was also nominated for a Grammy Award for her singing on the movie's soundtrack album.

In 1974, she married art director Jack Fisk, a frequent collaborator of director David Lynch. In the 1980s, her output was less prolific while she raised her two children on the family's ranch in Virginia. However, she reappeared on the big screen toward the end of the 1990s, demonstrating her considerable abilities once more in films like The Straight Story (1999) and In the Bedroom (2001), which won her yet another Oscar nomination.

My cousin, Rip Torn, persuaded me not to change my name. You shouldn't change what you are in the search for success.

There's a real danger in trying to stay king of the mountain. You stop taking risks, you stop being as creative, because you're trying to maintain a position. Apart from anything else that really takes the fun out of it.

When I started out in independent films in the early 70s, we did everything for the love of art. It wasn't about money and stardom. That was what we were reacting against. You'd die before you'd be bought.

"Sissy" was a nickname that her brothers used to call her when she was growing up, and it stayed with her.

Was the first choice to play the daughter in Terms of Endearment (1983).

Decided to skip college after her older brother, Robbie, died at 18 years of age in 1967 from leukemia during her senior year in high school. She decided life was way too short to waste it in four years of college.

Was Homecoming Queen of her Senior Class in High School.

Sissy's Best Actress Oscar nomination for Carrie (1976) is notable in that performances in horror films are rarely recognized by the academy.

In 1969, under the pseudonym "Rainbo," she recorded a novelty song about John Lennon titled, "John, You've Gone Too Far This Time".

During her audition for Carrie (1976), she wore a dress that her mother forced her to wear to a party when she was in the seventh grade.
