Shrek the Third is the third film of 2007 in the Shrek series, following Shrek and Shrek 2. It was produced by Jeffrey Katzenberg for DreamWorks Animation and is distributed by Paramount Picture, and was released in U.S. theaters on May 18, 2007 (exactly 6 years after the first Shrek),June 8 in Mexico, June 22 in Spain, June 15 in Brazil, June 13 in France and June 29 in the UK and Ireland.

It was produced with the working title of Shrek 3, the name being changed to avoid potential confusion with Shrek 3-D. Like the first two Shrek films, the movie is significantly based on fairy tale (specifically Grimm's Fairy Tales and Disney) themes.

Shrek The Third had the biggest box-office opening of an any animated movie ever made.

During Prince Charming's soliloquy in the alleyway New York City's graffiti artists "Cope2" and "Ja" tags are visible.

After Queen Lillian breaks through the prison walls with her head in order to free herself, Donkey and Puss and the princesses, she hums "Spoonful of Sugar" from Mary Poppins (1964), then segues into "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music (1965), both of which were sung by Julie Andrews who is the voice of Queen Lillian.

Artie: If there's something you want to do, or someone you really want to be, then the only one standing in your way... is you.

Headless Horseman: I've always wanted to play the flute.

Snow White: Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Let down your golden extension.

Puss in Boots: I don't know you, but I'd like to.

Merlin: Greetings, cosmic children of the universe. Welcome to my serenity circle. Please leave all bad vibes outside the healing vortex.

When the women escape and prepare to "take care of business", when Snow White rips off her sleeves she has a heart shaped tattoo with "Dopey" written on it on her right shoulder. Later, when she summons the critters to attack the tree guards, her right shoulder is bare.

At the end of Shrek 2 when Donkey discovers he has babies there is six of them. Yet in this third installment, there are only five babies.

A damped-down return to the Kingdom of Far Far Away, lacking the comic energy of the first brilliant film and not measuring up to the second. Reviewed by: Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun-Times.

There's no disguising the fact that Shrek the Third has come down with a bad case of sequelitis. You know the symptoms: Lots of razzle-dazzle to distract from the hole at the center of the story. You know, the place where fresh ideas should be. Reviewed by: Peter Travers of Rolling Stone.

The only thing majestic about Shrek the Third is the title. Reviewed by: Rick Groen of The Globe and Mail (Toronto).
