Actress Shelley Winters Shelley Winters Shelley Winters Wins Academy Award

Shelley Winters was raised in New York, where her family moved so her father, a tailor's cutter, could be close to the city's garment industry. She worked as a model and chorus girl to pay for acting lessons, making her Broadway debut in the comedy The Night Before Christmas (1941). She then had minor roles in several movies until she came to wider notice as a waitress smart enough to be scared - but dumb enough to be strangled - by Ronald Colman in the film noir A Double Life (1947). Ideally cast as Myrtle Wilson in a regrettably poor The Great Gatsby (1949), Winters played a succession of similar roles in film noirs such as Johnny Stool Pigeon (1949), and Westerns such as Winchester '73 (1950).

Her acting trademark was a slight squint when she suspected, much too late, she was in horrible danger: she plays a factory girl who winds up dumped in a lake by Montgomery Clift in A Place in the Sun (1951), for which she garnered an Oscar nomination. She later followed this up with an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Mrs. Van Daan in The Diary of Anne Frank (1959). Winters was Jewish, and fittingly donated this Oscar to the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam. But she got to keep her second Oscar, which she won six years later in 1965 for her role as a manipulative matriarch in A Patch of Blue.

In the 1960s, a little blowsier, Winters was perfect as Charlotte Haze in Lolita (1962), and the middle-aged sexpot in Alfie (1966). Then she switched to monster mamas and gorgons: a scary concierge in Roman Polanski's Le Locataire (1976) (The Tenant), and Mrs. Touchett in The Portrait of a Lady (1996). Winters was married four times and had many relationships with fellow actors. She recounted her lively love life in two autobiographies.

I did a picture in England one winter and it was so cold I almost got married.

The best way to find out about a man is to have lunch with his ex-wife

I have bursts of being a lady, but it doesn't last long.

Was roommates with Marilyn Monroe when they were both starting out in Hollywood.

Godmother of Laura Dern.

Attended Thomas Jefferson High School in New York City.
