Samuel Leroy Jackson's films have grossed more money in box-office sales than any other actor in the history of filmmaking. He went to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he studied drama, and cofounded the Just Us Theater. After the 1968 assassination of the leader of the U.S. civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jackson attended the funeral in Atlanta as one of the ushers. Upon graduation Jackson found bit parts on TV and spent years on the New York stage in productions for the Negro Ensemble Company and the New York Shakespeare Company.

In his younger years, Jackson himslef suffered the lot of too many talented African-American actors on the big screen, playing a string of typecast roles such as Gang Member Number Two in Ragtime 91981) and Hold-Up Man in Coming to America (1989). Director Spike Lee used him in bit parts as in School Daze (1988), and then gave him the plum role of crack addict Gator Purify in Jungle Fever (1991).

In the 1990s, more prominent roles came along. In Loaded Weapon 1 (1993), he spoofed the kind of action hero he would later become in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1993), in which he is a chain-smoker eaten by a dinosaur. Director Quentin Tarantino gifted him with reams of pithy, witty, profane dialogue as Jules Winnfiled in the hit Pulp Fiction (1994), and he won an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the process. Jackson then capitalized on the fact that producers at last knew who he was with big action paydays such as Die Hard: With A Vengeance (1995). He returned to Tarantino for Jackie Brown (1997); secured spots in the Star Wars (1999,2002,2005) and xXx franchises (2002,2005) and played the lead in Shaft (2000).
