After starring in the hugely popular telenovela Teresa (1989 - 1991), in her native Mexico, Salma Hayek's first movie role came with the multi-award-winning El callejon de los milagros (1995) (Midaq Alley). Moving to Hollywood, her lack of fluency in English saw her early parts play upon her smoldering Mexican beauty. She vented her spleen on a Spanish-language TV talk show on the injustice of such typecasting and, fortunately for her, director Robert Rodriguez was watching the show. He went on to cast her in Desperado (1995) playing opposite Antonio Banderas, and it was the success of that cult movie along with her appearance in his star-studded From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) that brought Hayek to prominence.

Now a recognizable name, Hollywood didn't quite know what to do with Hayek, and although some variation followed in movies such as Dogma (1999) and Chain of Fools (2000), she still tended to be typecast in parts that stressed her curvaceous good looks, ethnicity, and steely Mexican fortitude such as Fools Rush In (1997), Hotel (2001), and Ask the Dust (2006).

The biopic Frida (2002), a movie that she also coproduced, seemed to mark a new turn in her career, earning her a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of her countrywoman, artist and political activist Frida Kahlo. However, roles in Wild Wild West (1999), Once Upon a Time In Mexico (2003), and Bandidas (2006) continue to demonstrate that Hayek remains linked to the action genre that first brought her to public notice. Greater confidence in handling English-language material and a recent move to gain greater control over her own projects offer the hope of new avenues for Hayek while she retains the mantle of the premier Latina actress working in Hollywood today.

It sounds trite to go after men who are nice but when you've been hurt a lot it becomes appealing.
