Ronald Reagan Photo Collage A Young Actor Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan 40th US President Ronald Reagan On His Horse

In 1981, at the age of sixty-nine, Ronald Reagan became president of the United States. During his political career, he was often lampooned for his supposed B-status as an actor, but in truth he was a pleasant, competent star. If he never made the first rank, he was rarely terrible. Reagan started his acting career while studying economics, and his first job in showbiz was as a sportscaster at an Iowa radio station. He moved to Hollywood, where he was signed by Warner Brothers, and made his film debut in Love Is on the Air (1937). He rose from bit parts to straight-up heroes in juvenile action movies such as Secret Service of the Air (1939), and more earnest melodramas such as The Angels Wash Their Faces (1939).

Reagan's signature roles were in support, as the Gipper in Knute Rockne All American (1940) and the young man whose legs are needlessly amputated by a sadistic surgeon in King's Row (1942). In World War II, he served as a noncombat captain in the Army Air Corps and produced training films. When he returned to Hollywood in 1947, he began a five-year stint as president of the Screen Actors Guild union. He was earnest in the anti-Klan melodrama Storm Warning (1951), a rare liberal Hollywood film of the 1950s, but surprisingly winning in the oft-derided silly comedy Bedtime for Bonzo (1951), where he played a college professor who befriends his science lab chimpanzee. In the 1950s he worked mostly in TV, but before abandoning acting for politics in 1964, he made a good villain in The Killers (1964). In manipulated stock footage, he appears in Salvador (1986), Alien Nation (1988), and the multiple Oscar-winning Forrest Gump (1994).

In 1991, Reagan's autobiography, An American Hero, was well received by critics. He died in 2004 from Alzheimer's.

"It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance?"

40th president of the United States (20 January 1981 - 20 January 1989).

Governor of California. Term of service: 2 January 1967 - 6 January 1975.

President of the Screen Actors Guild from 1947 to 1952 and 1959-1960.

Graduate of Eureka College (1932).
