Director Robert Rodriguez Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino Robert Rodriguez

I always ask for less money than we need so that you have to be more creative.

Video technology puts film-making back in the hands of the people. That's how I learned how to make movies - making movies at home.

I always consider Salma [Hayek] for my projects, even for male roles.

American film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer, editor and musician Robert Rodriguez was the middle child of a family of 10 children whose parents Rebecca (née Villegas) was a nurse and father, Cecilio G. Rodríguez was a salesman.

An artist by nature, he was very rarely seen sans pencil-in-hand doodling some abstract (yet astounding) dramatic feature on a piece of paper. His mother, not a fan of the "dreary" cinema of the 1970s, instilled a sense of cinema in her children by taking them on weekly trips to San Antonio's famed Olmos Theatre movie house and treated them to a healthy dose of Hollywood's "Golden Age", from Sergio Leone to the silent classic of Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton.

He showed an interest in cartooning and film-making at a very young age.

He used the family's old Super-8 film camera to make his first films and when his father brought home a new a video camera he moved up to a whole new level.

Rather than handing in term papers at school, he is allowed to hand in "term movies" because, as he himself explains, "[the teachers] knew I'd put more effort into a movie than I ever would into an essay."

He started his own comic strip, "Los Hooligans" while in college.

His movies won every local film competition and festival. When low academic grades threatened to keep him out of University of Texas, Austin's renowned film department, he proved his worth the only way he knew how: he maked a movie. Three, in fact: trilogy of short movies called "Austin Stories" starring his siblings. It beat the entries of the school's top students and allowed Robert to enter the program. After being accepted into the film department, Robert took $400 of his own money to make his "biggest" film yet: a 16mm short comedy/fantasy called Bedhead (1991). It went on to win multiple awards.

He sold his body to science to test new medications in order to help finance his first feature-length picture “El Mariachi” (1992) before ultimately recalibrating the notion of independence as a one-man writer, director, producer, editor, composer, and special effects man.

He is a huge fan of John Carpenter.

Set up a symphony orchestra in his garage to record the score for “Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams” (2002).

His production company was called "Los Hooligans", named after the comic strip he drew in college, but it is now titled "Troublemaker Studios".

He is an accomplished chef.

Has resigned from the DGA twice. The first time was so he could directed the non-guild “Four Rooms” (1995) with Quentin Tarantino and two other directors. The second time was in 2004 when he wanted to give Frank Miller a co-director credit for “Sin City” (2005). Other notable DGA "defectors" include his close friends George Lucas and Quentin Tarantino.

Turned down the offer to direct Kevin Smith's "Superman Lives” and “Dogma” (1999) .
