Reba McEntire hosting the Academy of Country Music Awards Reba McEntire Country Singer and Actress Reba McEntire Reba McEntire Beautiful In Black

A feisty redhead with a thick Oklahoma accent, Reba McEntire paralyzed a strong, pure voice and a penchant for singing songs about ordinary women – and the extraordinary demands that life places on them – into country-music super-stardom. She is one of the best-selling female country artists of all time, yet still remains accessible enough for her fans to refer to her simply as Reba. McEntire’s unaffected, strikingly emotional delivery invited a few comparisons to her idol Patsy Cline; and like Cline, McEntire made news outside the C&W arena as the result of a plane crash: In 1991 eight members of her band were killed when a twin-engine jet bound for a show in Texas slammed into the side of a mountain. (The musicians included Jim Hammon, Paula Kay Evans, Michael Thomas, Terry Jackson, Joey Cigainero, Tony Saputo and Chris Austin, as well as band manager, Kirk Capello). The tragedy occurred the same year that McEntire released “For My Broken Heart”, her most consistently grim album (and one of her biggest commercial successes).

McEntire’s father was a steer roper on the rodeo circuit. During high school, the singer competed at rodeos as a barrel racer and played nightclubs with her siblings as the Singing McEntires. She eventually went to college and planned to become a teacher, but a gig singing the national anthem at the National Rodeo Finals resulted in a contract with Mercury Records. Her first Top 10 C&W hit came in 1980 – four years after signing – with “(You Life Me) Up to Heaven” (#8). A steady stream of country hits followed: “Today All Over Again” (#5, 1981), “I’m Not That Lonely Yet” (#3, 1982), “Can’t Even Get the Blues” (#1, 1982),”You’re the First Time I’ve Thought About Leaving” (#1, 1983, “Why Do We Want (What We Know We Can’t Have)” (#7, 1983), “Why Do We Want (What We Know We Can’t Have)” (#7, 1983) and “Just a Little Love” (#5, 1984).

But it was in the latter half of the 1980s, after she switched to MCA Records, that McEntire’s star really rose. Her string of Top 3 C&W albums began with 1986’s “Whoever’s in New England” (#1) and continued with “What Am I Gonna Do About You” (#1, 1986), Greatest Hits (#2, 1987), “The Last One to Know” (#3, 1987), “Reba” (#1, 1988), “Sweet Sixteen” (#1, 1989), “Reba Live” (#2, 1989), “Rumor Has It” (#2, 1990), “For My Broken Heart” (#3, 1991), “It’s Your Call (#1, 1992), “Greatest Hits, vol. 2” (32, 1993), “Read My Mind” (#2, 1994), “Starting Over” (#1, 1995), “What If It’s You” (#1, 1996) and “If You See Him” (#2, 1998). McEntire racked up an equally impressive list of top country singles, including “How Blue” (#1, 1994), “Somebody Should Leave” (#1, 1985), “Whoever’s in New England” (#1, 1986), “Little Rock” (#1, 1986), “What Am I Gonna Do About You” (#1, 1986), “One Promise Too Late” (#1, 1987), “The Last One to Know” (#1, 1987), “Love Will Find Its Way to You” (#1, 1988). “I Know How He Feels” (#1, 1988), “New Fool at an Old Game” (#1, 1988), “Cathy’s Clown” (#1, 1989), “Walk On” (#2, 1990), “You Lie” (#1, 1990), “Rumor Has It” (#3, 1990), “Fallin’ Out of Love” (#2, 1991), “For My Broken Heart” (#1, 1991), “Is There Life Out There” (#1, 1992, “The Greatest Man I Never Knew” (#3, 1992, “Does He Love You” (#1, 1993), “Till You Love Me” (#2, 1994), “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” (#1, 1995), “And Still” (#2, 1995), “The Fear of Being Alone” (#2, 1996, “How Was I to Know” (#1, 1996), “I’d Rather Ride Around With You” (#2, 1997) and “If You See Him / If You See Her”, a collaboration with Brooks & Dunn (#1, 1998).

McEntire is also known as a strong businesswoman; she and her second husband, Narvel Blackstock – her band’s steel guitarist, who became her road manager – ran Starstruck Entertainment, a company that handled song publishing and managing other acts. McEntire branched out into acting in 1989 with a role in the cult horror flick “Tremors”. She also co-starred in the Kenney Rogers’ TV movie “The Gambler”, as well as a few telefilms based on her own songs. In 1994 McEntire published her autobiography, “Reba: My Story” (written with Tom Carter), which spent 15 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. That same year, her album “Read My Mind reached #2 on the country chart. She continued to release a new album almost every year in the late 1990s and two in 1999, one a Christmas collection. In 1999 McEntire also published a second book, “Comfort From a Country Quilt: Finding New Inspiration and Strength From Old-Fashioned Values”, reflections on her life, particularly being a mother to her then, nine year old son, Shelby. In addition, she went on the road with “The Singer’s Diary, a musical play about her life and career from 1974 to 1991 (with McEntire playing herself) that ended with a concert. In March 2001 she returned to feature-film acting in “One Night at McCool’s”, with Michael Douglas and Paul Reiser. She became a hit on Broadway that year as well, starring in “Annie Get Your Gun”.

She remains second only to Dolly Parton as the female performer with the most number-one country singles over the course of her career) and has released five gold albums, six platinum albums, two double-platinum albums, four triple-platinum albums, a quadruple-platinum album, and a quintuple-platinum album, for certified album sales of 33.5 million over the 20-year period. She expanded her activities as an actress in film, on stage, and particularly on television, where she starred in a situation comedy, “Reba”, which lasted from 2001 to 2007.
