Actor Peter OToole Peter OToole Lawrence Of Arabia 1962 Peter OToole

Peter O'Toole was born the son of an Irish bookmaker and a Scottish nurse. After doing National Service as a radioman in the British Royal Navy, he applied to Dublin's Abbey Theatre Drama School but was rejected because he couldn't speak Irish. He went on to win a scholarship to London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Initially he worked in the theater doing Shakespearean productions at Bristol's Old Vic. He then started to get film work, and was well down the cast list in Kidnapped (1960) and The Savage Innocents (1960).

He was instantly established as a major movie star in the title role of David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia (1962), which won him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Tall, good-looking, and capable of fanaticism and disillusion, O'Toole's T.E. Lawrence was a romantic ideal rather than a true historical figure, but the role provided the actor with a screen image that he continued to explore in a variety of blueblood maniacs; O'Toole has produced two different takes on King Henry II in Becket (1964) and The Lion in Winter (1968), and played Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha (1972).

Medical problems threatened to destroy his career in the 1970s, but he later returned to the screen, switching to showy, well-spoken cameos and playing the Scottish academic and teacher Sir Reginald Fleming Johnston in Bernardo Bertolucci's biopic The Last Emperor (1987). His turn as the still-lecherous older actor in Venus (2006) won O'Toole his eighth Best Actor Oscar nomination. In 2003, the Academy gave him an Honorary Award in recognition of his lifelong contribution to film. He was initially reluctant to accept the honor, arguing that he was "still in the game," and would like more time to "win the lovely bugger outright."

I can't stand light. I hate weather. My idea of heaven is moving from one smoke-filled room to another.

The only exercise I take is walking behind the coffins of friends who took exercise.

In 1976 he underwent surgery to remove parts of his stomach and intestine due to his heavy drinking. In the following year he almost died from a blood disorder.

Broke his hip while filming Venus (2006), but returned to work after only three weeks.
