Cormac McCarthy's novel No Country for Old Men begins with reminiscence about the hazard of confronting incomprehensible evil. So, too, begins Joel and Ethan Coen's movie adaptation of the book, which is a Western set in southwestern Texas in 1980.

Opening to careful shots of daybreak, orchestrated to magnificent effect by cinematographer Roger Deakins, a voice-over by Tommy Lee Jones sets the scene: "The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. Not to be glorious. But I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand."

As sure a meditation on aging as has been put to film, the tone of No Country for Old Men remains elegiac throughout. Admittedly not for every taste (especially given the frequency of savage violence that explodes in the story), the Coen brothers have again taken a regionally specific voice - in this case McCarthy's - and used it as the basis for exploring the frailties of manhood, helped along with winning support performances from Woody Harrelson, Kelly Macdonald, and Barry Corbin.

The plot centers on Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), a welder and Vietnam vet, who stumbles onto the aftermath of an actual Mexican standoff. Several men lay dead surrounding a heroin stash and satchel containing over two million dollars. Smelling opportunity, Llewelyn takes the money and sets in motion a three-way cast-and-mouse pursuit. Working to unravel the fillings, and suspecting Moss's very real peril, Sheriff Bell (Jones) pursues his quarry, becoming aware of another pursuer, the careful and efficient hit man Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem). It's this tripled action - Chigurh chasing Moss, and Sheriff Bell chasing both Moss and Chigurh - that gives No Country for Old Men its sense of mounting tension, dread, and savage magic.

So many dialogue zingers. So much unexpected early 1980s fashion. In the end, it will be hard to think of air compressors and rugged Western lawmen in quite the same way ever again.

The title is part of the first line from William Butler Yeats' poem "Sailing to Byzantium". The full line is "That is no country for old men".

Wendell: That's very linear Sheriff.
Ed Tom Bell: Well, age will flatten a man.

Llewelyn Moss: If I don't come back, tell mother I love her.
Carla Jean Moss: Your mother's dead, Llewelyn.
Llewelyn Moss: Well then I'll tell her myself.

During the shot of Sheriff Bell's reflection on the TV in Llewelyn's home, you can see at the far right corner of the television the reflection of three crew members.

Joel and Ethan Coen's adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's 2005 novel is an indisputably great movie, at this point the year's very best. Reviewed by: Peter Travers of Rolling Stone.

The Coen brothers adaptation is impeccable, a perfect mirror of McCarthy's prose – sparse, suspenseful, probing and profoundly disturbing. Reviewed by: Rick Groen of The Globe and Mail (Toronto).

The Coen brothers have fashioned a wry and riveting hybrid of a drama, Western, crime thriller and action film that is as powerful and thought-provoking as it is genre-bending. Reviewed by: Claudia Puig of USA Today.
