Nicole Kidman With Her Baby Actress Nicole Kidman Nicole Kidman Beautiful In White Academy Award Winning Actress Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman was born to Australian parents in Hawaii, but she returned to her family's native home when she was a child. She dropped out of high school to serve a busy acting apprenticeship in Australia, as a cute teen star in BMX Bandits (1983), Bush Christmas (1983), and The Year My Voice Broke (1987). She went international as the imperiled wife in Dead Calm (1989), showing a maturity that gave her a range beyond her years. Yet her first Hollywood movie roles were conventional: love interest for her first husband, Tom Cruise, in Days of Thunder (1990) and Far and Away (1992), a nude gun moll in Billy Bathgate (1991), and under peril in Malice (1993).

A committed turn as the viciously ambitious housewife turned TV personality in Gus Van Sant's To Die For (1995) reestablished her acting credentials. She then wavered cannily between commercial efforts such as Batman Forever (1995) and The Peacemaker (1997), and art theater movies such as The Portrait of a Lady (1996) and Dogville (2003). She and Cruise also famously joined forces to play a couple in Stanley Kubrick's last movie, the erotic thriller Eyes Wide Shut (1999), which had the world fascinated by what they saw as a peephole into the nature of Kidman and Cruise's relationship. Whether what audiences saw onscreen as the chemistry between the couple was a reflection of their offscreen life, no one will ever know, and the couple divorced two years later.

Once single, Kidman's career seemed to take off, making her one of the most versatile contemporary female actresses in the world, Moulin Rouge! (2001) showed she could sing and dance, and won her an Oscar nomination; she followed this up with an Oscar win for her role as writer Virginia Woolf in The Hours (2002). Kidman married country singer Keith Urban in 2006.

It's so bizarre, I'm not scared of snakes or spiders. But I'm scared of butterflies. There is something eerie about them. Something weird!

I think it's important that we don't all have to hold our heads high all the time saying everything's fine.

[on receiving her star on the Walk of Fame] I've never been so excited to have people walk all over me for the rest of my life.

Usually, a young actress can't deliver because she doesn't have the emotional baggage, really, to play those things. That's something that's very beautiful about becoming a woman, and becoming a woman in your 30s. If you've lived your life, and lived it where you've said, "I want to be a participator and not a voyeur", then you have an enormous amount to pull on.

Suffered a broken rib while rehearsing a dance routine for the movie Moulin Rouge! (2001). Production was halted while she recovered.

Wore a corset while filming The Portrait of a Lady (1996) to take her waist down to 19".

Spent two weeks in bed after filming of The Portrait of a Lady (1996) - diagnosed as suffering from "emotional stress".

Scared of butterflies.

Although naturally left-handed, she taught herself to write right-handed for her role in The Hours (2002), where she played the right-handed author Virginia Woolf.

Scored an IQ of 132+

Is a pianist, and did her own piano-playing in Cold Mountain (2003).

Is allergic to strawberries.

Dropped out of the role of Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator (2004) due to scheduling conflicts.

Jim Carrey is her best male friend.

One of her favorite movies is Gone with the Wind (1939).

Is a natural blonde.
