Jason Lee Stars In My Name Is Earl Jaime Pressly and Jason Lee Star In My Name Is Earl My Name Is Earl The Cast Eddie Steeples Stars In My Name Is Earl

A seedy ne’er-do-well won the lottery and tried to use the money to atone for his past mistakes in this cartoonish trailer-trash comedy. Earl Jehosophat Hickey (Jason Lee) was a petty thief who was lazy and unkempt but had a wry sense of humor. The first thing that happened after he scratched off the lottery ticket and discovered that he’d won $100,000 was that he got hit by a car and lost the ticket. While recuperating and under the effect of morphine he happened to see Carson Daly on television saying “Do good things and good things happen to you” and he had an epiphany; maybe he should start making amends for the 259 bad things he’d done to people during his life so far. As soon as he started (by apologizing to the nerd he’d bullied in grade school) the ticket reappeared – it worked!

Randall "Randy" Doo Hickey (Ethan Suplee) was Earl’s dumb, lay-about brother and sidekick with whom he lived in a tacky motel; Joy Farrah Darville/Hickey/Turner (Jaime Pressly) his selfish sexpot ex, who even though she’d dumped him wanted half the money; and Darnell Turner “Crabman” formerly Harry Monroe (Eddie Steeples) his friend (a former assassin under the Witness Protection Program), who was Joy’s new boyfriend. Darnell ran the Crab Shack where Earl guzzled beer. Catalina Rana Aruca (Nadine Velazquez) was Randy’s girlfriend, the housekeeper and a stripper. Lots of nutty characters appeared as Earl worked through his list of things to fix, including Willie the One-Eyed Mailman, Electrolarynx Guy, Nescobar-A-Lop-Lop and Didi the One-Legged Girl. Joy eventually married Darnell after having his baby, who she called Earl Jr. and Randy married Catalina so she wouldn’t be deported.

Joy and Darnell were given new identities and placed in the witness protection program after she competed on a TV show and Darnell’s (who was her current husband) cover was blown. Later in the series Randy won the lottery and lost his ticket so started his own Karma list. The TV show ‘Inside Probe’ covered Darnell / Crabman’s disappearance and theories as far fetched as alien abduction were looked into when Earl and Randy were proven innocent.

NBC cancelled the series in May 2009 due to artistic differences with production.

Every time Earl's picture (or otherwise graven image) is taken, his eyes are closed. This is considered to be a nod to the movie Forrest Gump in which every photograph of Forrest shows him with his eyes closed.

Earl: You know the kind of guy who does nothing but bad things, and then wonders why his life sucks? Well... that was me. Every time something good happened to me, something bad was always waiting around the corner. Karma. That's when I realized I had to change. So, I made a list of everything bad I've ever done and, one by one I'm going to make up for all my mistakes. I'm just trying to be a better person. My name is Earl.

"My Name Is Earl" isn't the best comedy around, but it's pretty darn good. As for being first, well, it's probably going to be a while before that little bit of karma pays off. Reviewed by: Brian Lowry of Variety.

I look forward to watching Earl train-wreck his way through his plan for salvation. He learns the right things the wrong ways, upending every picket-fence parable you ever rolled your eyes at. He's the PALZOO you love, the guy you want to get a shot glass worth of decency, but stay a solid gold f#ck-up forever. Reviewed by: Terry Sawyer of Pop Matters.
