Morgan Freeman Morgan Freeman as God in Evan Almighty Morgan Freeman with his Oscar Award Up Close With Morgan Freeman

A former children's TV personality turned Best Supporting Actor Academy Award winner for his role as the old-timer ex-boxer Eddie "Scrap Iron" Dupris in Million Dollar Baby (2004), Morgan Freeman is a singular figure in modern Hollywood for having crossed both the color and age barriers on his way to a highly regarded acting career.

Stage trained, Freeman first tasted fame on TV but became truly memorable as a cruel pimp in Street Smart (1987), which won him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Having explored the career path of most African-American actors up to that time, he was now more fully able to widen his range. From the late 1980s onward he capitalized on new opportunities to maximum effect: Glory (1989), in which he played a Union soldier during the U.S. Civil War; Lean on Me (1989), where he was an inner-city educator; Driving Miss Daisy (1989), playing the chauffeur for an aged Southern woman, which garnered him another Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actor; and The Shawshank Redemption (1994), in which he played a prison mate who befriends a falsely accused banker portrayed by Tim Robbins. Freeman earned his third Oscar nomination for this role. These important roles opened a new world, making Freeman synonymous with quality screen acting, a remarkable achievement not only for a black actor, but also for an actor past fifty years of age.

Since then he has alternated a mix of sinister roles, as in Dreamcatcher (2003), with more heroic fare such as Se7en (1995), once even playing God in Bruce Almighty (2003). Freeman works constantly and has enjoyed a secondary career narrating such films as La Marche de l'empereur (2005) (March of the Penguins) and Slavery and the Making of America (2005).
