Meryl Streep Double Shot Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada A Younger Meryl Streep Actress Meryl Streep

By now the conventional portrait is simply stated: Meryl Streep is the most brilliant actress of her generation. Insert your preferred superlative here. Quake in the presence of genius. Bend a knee, bow your head, and genuflect, genuflect, genuflect. You may now recognize greatness, but if it is not clear enough from personal experience, consider the evidence of the critical establishment.

Across a career that now spans three decades and includes celebrated work in television, movies, and on the stage, Streep has received 16 Academy Award nominations with two additional wins for Sophie's Choice (1982) and Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). She has won two Emmy Awards from three nominations for Holocaust (1978) and Angels in America (2003). She has also won seven Golden Globe Awards from among 25 nominations for Angels in America, Adaptation, (2002), Sophie's Choice, The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), Kramer vs. Kramer, and The Devil Wears Prada (2006). Throughout this body of work, she has starred, costarred, or voiced roles that have sampled most genres, allowing her to perform as a bug in The Ant Bully (2006), a harridan from beyond in Death Becomes Her (1992), an action star in The River Wild (1994), a monstrous fashion magazine editor in The Devil Wears Prada, an adventuress in Out of Africa (1985), and a small-town survivor in The Deer Hunter (1978), all taken from a much longer and diverse list.

Simultaneously, and in almost total contrast to most other important actors and actresses, she's been a devoted wife and mother, married since 1978 to Don Gummer, with whom she has had four children, some of whom have been involved with their mother's career while in utero, if only at awards presentations at which their mother is a perennial favorite. This commitment to family is unusual. It suggests a personal set of priorities that promotes stability, care, and loyalty, characteristics that have also served her preparation for the work that has made her synonymous with high-quality movie acting and a kind of perfectionist craftsmanship that is easily overlooked.

Streep is an East Coaster by grooming and a one-time operatic wannabe turned thespian, via turns at Vassar and Yale, as if by destiny. Gifted with a robotlike ability to mimic accent and dialect, and being genuinely able to physically transform through the combination of costume and makeup, the results of her labors are remarkably complete. In fact, one line of criticism evokes machinery to describe her performances - a feeling that Streep churns acting "product" because her performances always have a new style of speech and emotional framework, as if designed by computer.

Shibboleth of critical and popular respect that she is, and magnet for those interested in knocking the great from worshipful pedestals, Streep's true brilliance lies in the subtleties of her performances, the kinds of detail that extend offscreen and haunt the imagination in moments of thoughtful consideration. Witness her emotional breakdown in the center of The Hours (2002), in which her Clarissa Vaughan prepares a dinner party for an ailing friend intent on dying. Or the nervous fingers of Lindy Chamberlain in A Cry in the Dark (1988) as she defends herself against charges of murdering her child. Or the facade of maternal care slowly cracking around Kate Gulden in One True Thing (1998). Or Karen Silkwood's blue-collar defiance in Silkwood (1983). The list could go on, but suffice it to say that Streep is unlike other performers in that we never forget we're watching Streep perform, even as we are transported into the universe of her performances and allowed to watch her characters convincingly become three-dimensional people. Middle age has neither diminished her abilities, nor - despite the dearth of major roles for maturer actresses - reduced the level of her appearances on the big screen. Having been nominated regularly for Academy Awards for more than two decades, she truly is a superstar.

I try to lead as ordinary a life as I can. You can't get spoiled if you do your own ironing.

If you've been married for a long time you love without looking.

Has a fear of helicopters.

Before making it big, she was a waitress at The Hotel Somerset in Somerville, New Jersey, USA.

Her fans call themselves "Streepers".
