A Younger Mel Gibson Actor Mel Gibson With Long Hair A Smiling Mel Gibson Mel Gibson in Braveheart

Recognizing the controversies that surround his religious dogmatism and his struggle with alcoholism, Mel Gibson is nonetheless one of contemporary cinema's great actors, action stars, and directors. Born in the United States in 1956, he was raised in Australia and trained at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. He performed at Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Arts, and his early career was spent on the stage and TV. he first stood out on the big screen in the late 1970s and early 1980s for his work in Tim (1979) and Gallipoli (1981). Worldwide audiences first embraced him in the futuristic action movie Mad Max (1979) and its sequels, Mad Max 2 (1981) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985).

A host of popular roles followed: as Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon (1987) and its numerous sequels, The Patriot (2000), and Signs (2002), making him a bankable star and one of People magazine's "sexiest men on earth." But he also offered performances that showcased his depth beyond the shoot-'em-up and romance-'em template he'd helped popularize, including the lead in Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet (1980).

Approaching middle age, now wealthy, and looking to strike new ground, Gibson became a filmmaker with The Man Without a Face (1993). He followed this with Braveheart (1995), which he produced, directed, and starred in, as Scottish hero William Wallace. The epic won him two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. Enter faith, cue detractors, ring cash registers, and watch one of the world's great male stars transformed into a spiritual leader and experimental artist, with The Passion of the Christ (2004). He followed this by writing and directing an action tale of the Mayan kingdom in decline, Apocalypto (2006).

My fears: everything from being afraid that I'm going to run out of cream for my cornflakes right up to someone chopping my privates off.

I'd like to be able to wake up early every morning, but I don't. I'd like to quit smoking. I'd like to never lose my temper. The list goes on and on. I'd even like to get dressed by myself, and not have other people watching me.

He was the first Australian actor to be paid $1,000,000 for a film role.

Was offered the role of Eliot Ness in The Untouchables (1987), but had to decline because he was already working on one of the Lethal Weapon films.

He turned down the role of Harvey Dent/Two Face in Batman Forever (1995), due to scheduling conflicts with Braveheart (1995).

Turned down the role of Sgt. John McLoughlin in World Trade Center (2006) to direct Apocalypto (2006) instead.

On July 28, 2006, he was arrested for drunk driving in Malibu, California.

Checked himself into a recovery program for alcohol abuse. [1st August 2006]

Turned down the role of "The Terminator" in James Cameron's The Terminator (1984).
