Actor Mel Brooks Mel Brooks

Mel Brooks grew up in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Russian-Jewish parents. He served in the U.S. army in World War II as an engineer stationed in North Africa. After the war, he took to the stage as a stand-up comedian, and then became a comedy writer for television. He later moved across into movies; some would argue most notably as a director and producer.

It has been commented, not unfairly, that the films Brooks writes and/or directs are funnier when he has minimal or no screen time. Certainly, The Producers (1968) and Young Frankenstein (1974), to which he contributes only brief voiceovers, are his best work, and some of the films in which he takes lead roles, as the grumpy millionaire in Life Stinks! (1991) or Dr. Abraham Van Helsing in Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995), are almost endurance tests.

A natural ham who wanted to cast himself as the Nazi playwright eventually played by Kenneth Mars in The Producers, Brooks is amusing as the groveling peasant in The Twelve Chairs (1970), but less so as Governor Le Petomaine in Blazing Saddles (1974), Yoghurt in Spaceballs (1987), or Rabbi Tuckman in Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993). Taking center screen, he sweet-naturedly skewers himself as Mel Funn in Silent Movie (1976); has one great scene in the Alfred Hitchcock parody High Anxiety (1977) as his paranoid psychoanalyst who suddenly has a burst of confidence and delivers a show-stopping Sinatra-style lounge number; and doesn't disgrace the memory of Jack Benny in the remake of To Be or Not to Be (1983). Brooks has had significant success on the stage with his production of The Producers - the Broadway version won a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards. He was married to actress Anne Bancroft from 1964 until her death in 2005.

I'm the only Jew who ever made a buck offa 'Hitler'!

Served as a corporal in the US army in North Africa during World War II.
