Maximilian Schell A Young Maximilian Schell Actor Maximilian Schell Maximilian Schell - Actor

Along with Marcello Mastroianni, Maurice Chevalier, and Emil Jannings, Maximilian Schell is one of the most renowned European film actors. The son of actress Margarethe Noe von Nordberg and writer/poet Hermann Ferdinand Schell, Maximilian was born in Vienna in 1930. He was raised during World War II in neutral Zurich, Switzerland, and was a committed anti-Nazi as a teenager. His sister, Maria Schell, was already an international movie star when Schell made his Hollywood film debut in the war drama The Young Lions (1958), opposite Marlon Brando. But he is perhaps best known for his role as defense attorney Hans Rolfe in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), a part he had first played in a live TV broadcast two years earlier. Schell won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Rolfe, beating his costar Spencer Tracy.

He has a wide range of credits to his name and has appeared in such movies as The Odessa File (1974), Cross of Iron (1977), Julia (1977), Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far (1977), The Chosen (1981), and in the science-fiction thriller Deep Impact (1998). Schell is also an accomplished director; his film Der Fussganger (1973) (The Pedestrian) was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film, and his documentary portrait of actress Marlene Dietrich, Marlene (1984), was nominated for the Feature Documentary Oscar. He also directed a documentary film about his sister, Meine Schwester Maria (2002) (My Sister Maria), to much critical acclaim. Since the 1990s he has appeared in many German-language made-for-TV films, such as Alles Gluck dieser Erde (2003) (All the Luck in the World). More recently he appeared onstage in London in Robert Altman's production of Arthur Miller's Resurrection Blues (2006).
