The 82nd Annual Academy Awards were held last night in Los Angeles, CA and PRECIOUS: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire was a victor in two categories: Best Supporting Actress (Mo'Nique) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Geoffrey Fletcher).

Mariah arrived on the red carpet in a blue Valentino dress with her husband Nick Cannon and spoke about the film: "I just want as many people as possible to see this movie," shetold Fox News. "I feel like it is such a work of art."

Congratulations to the cast and crew of "Precious"!

The critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated film PRECIOUS: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire was the big winner at tonight's 2010 Independent Spirit Awards, recognizing independent film-making.

The film won all five awards it was nominated for including the top honors of Best Feature Film and Best Director. Director Lee Daniels and cast members Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz all got on stage to receive the big award!

Mariah, who looked gorgeous in Valentino, also presented the "Best Cinematography" award with Andy Garcia.

Arrival and Backstage Photos:

In anticipation of the 82nd Academy Awards, The National Post writes up five things you didn't know about the six-time Oscar nominated film "Precious".

Tune in to the live airing of the awards ceremony on Sunday, March 7th 8:00pm EST/5:00pm PST on ABC.

1. Helen Mirren was originally supposed to take the role of the social worker played by five-octave-spanning diva Mariah Carey. As director Lee Daniels told Essence, the much-decorated British thespian dropped out at the last minute:

"Helen Mirren fell out--she called me up and said that she had a paying job. I got a phone call like three hours later from Mariah asking me to come over to play. I said, 'No, I'm working.' I told her what I was working on and she was like I know that book. And, then I called Helen back and was like, 'What do you think of Mariah playing this role, a social worker.' She said it was genius. She said you know "If I do it Lee, it's expected but if Mariah does it, it's really unexpected. "

Dame Helen may now be cursing her decision -- shockingly to everyone who's seen Glitter, Mariah Carey's acting is earning some of the best reviews of her life.

2. Impress your friends at the Oscar party with the correct pronunciation of the young star's name, Gabourey Sidibe. Inherited from her Senegalese father, it's pronounced SIH-deh-bay. And if you want to be one of those annoying people who's all "I'm an entertainment insider" and calls Sandra Bullock "Sandy" and Martin Scorsese "Marty," you can make Gabourey "Gabby." Although you may want to watch what you say to Gabby anyway. One of her most-excellent quotes from a profile in New York:

"They try to paint the picture that I was this downtrodden, ugly girl who was unpopular in school and in life, and then I got this role and now I'm awesome. But the truth is that I've been awesome, and then I got this role."

3. Mariah Carey isn't the only non-conventional casting, but her glammed-down presence has still managed to overshadow Lenny Kravitz, who plays a handsome nurse. Daniels told Rolling Stone:

"From my first film, Monster's Ball, with Puffy and Mos Def to Macy Gray in Shadowboxer, Eve in The Woodsman with Kevin Bacon, a musician has been in every film I've done. I love musicians. I'm going to do a musical next year [with Kravitz]. I'm not allowed to talk about it."

4. Vanity Fair's annual Hollywood cover was widely criticized for being very white, very young, and, frankly, kind of creepy (ok, that last bit may just be me). Along with Avatar/Star Trek sylph Zo Saldaa, Sidibe was one of the less-snowy-hued actresses many felt should have been on the cover, instead of just inside. But Sidibe isn't sweating it, she tells OK!:

"Was I satisfied? Yeah, well... I mean, I come from a world where I'm not on covers and I'm not in magazines at all," she said. "And so I was happy to be in the magazine. Gabourey continued that if she was chosen for the cover, which included up-and-coming young stars Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish, Amanda Seyfried and Anna Kendrick, she would have wondered whether she fit in.

5. The movie has inspired controversy on everything from its alleged status as "poverty porn" to Sidibe's weight to the title (the New Yorker's Anthony Lane called it "preposterous") to Mo'Nique's campaign (or lack thereof) for an Oscar. Is Mo'Nique's strategy a real disdain for the star-making machine, or a cunning way to get even more attention? Whatever it is, it's made a lot of people mad, including this guy. What it's not? the Blind Side. Some have called it that movie's "reverse."

With a stunning seven-octave voice that she put through stratospheric gymnastics, Mariah Carey became an overnight star. Her vocal prowess and range drew comparisons to Minnie Riperton and Yma Sumac, but most often to her contemporary Whitney Houston. Yet unlike Houston, Carey cowrote or coproduced her own gospel-inflected, dance-pop songs and ardent ballads. These have found immense popularity: Carey is the best-selling female artist of all time, with more than 140 million albums and singles sold worldwide. She was the only artist to have scored a #1 hit in every year of the '90s, and (at this writing) has had more #1 hits for more weeks at #1 than any other artist in history. In October 1999 she surpassed the Beatles' long-running record of 59 weeks at #1.

Carey was born to a black Venezuelan aeronautics engineer father and an Irish-American opera singer mother who also worked as a voice coach. The couple divorced when Mariah was three, and she moved with her mother to successive towns in suburban Long Island, New York. At 17 she moved to New York City and pursued a career in music while supporting herself as the self-professed "world's worst waitress."

Carey befriended keyboardist Ben Margulies, with whom she began writing songs, and landed backup singing jobs. One, with minor late-'80s dance-music singer Brenda K. Starr, proved crucial when Starr met Columbia Records chief Tommy Mottola at a party and gave him a demo tape of Carey's songs. Mottola reportedly played the tape in his car on his way home, and doubled back to the party to seek out Carey. He signed her and made her career development a top priority. Carey's debut album (#4, 1990) yielded #1 hit singles in "Vision of Love" (1990), "Love Takes Time" (1990), "Someday" (1991), and "I Don't Wanna Cry" (1991), and brought her Grammy Awards in 1991 for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. Emotions (#1, 1991) continued Carey's roll, with such hits as the title track (#1, 1991), "Can't Let Go" (#2, 1991), and "Make It Happen" (#5, 1992). Unplugged produced a hit cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" (#1, 1992), which also led to a solo recording deal for Trey Lorenz, the backup singer feaatured on the single with Carey.

In June 1993 Carey married Mottola, a man 20 years her senior. She then released Music Box (#1, 1993), which promptly yielded the #1 hits "Dreamlover" and "Hero." In fall 1993 she embarked on her first concert tour, for which she received mixed reviews. Her 1994 Christmas album spawned the hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You."

Carey achieved a milestone with the 1995 release of Daydream, which debuted at #1. The first single, "Fantasy," debuted at the top as well. With Daydream, Carey became the first female artist in history to have three albums that each sold more than 8 million copies. The second single, "One Sweet Day," a duet with the Philadelphia R&B vocal group Boyz II Men, also hit #1, holding the spot for a record-setting 16 weeks. A third single, "Always Be My Baby," followed suit, completing the hat trick.

Carey and Mottola divorced in 1997. She released Butterfly (#1, 1997), which asserted a stronger hip-hop flavor and yielded the #1 hits "Honey" (with rappers Ma$e and the Lox) and "My All." #1's collected Carey's 13 chart-topping singles, with four new tracks, including "When You Believe" (from The Prince of Egypt), a duet with Whitney Houston.

The 1999 release of the multiplatinum Rainbow (#2, 2000), which produced a #1 single in "Heartbreaker," capped a decade in which Carey was its biggest-selling female artist. Musically, the singer continued to embrace hip-hop elements, emphasizing samples and inviting such rap stars as Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Da Brat, and Snoop Dogg to make guest vocal appearances. In early 2001 Carey signed a multi-record, multimillion-dollar deal with Virgin. It was announced her first Birgin release would be the soundtrack to the film All That Glitters, in which Carey played the lead.

Bought Marilyn Monroe's white lacquered baby grand piano at auction in October, 1999 for $600,000 plus commission.

Worked a variety of odd jobs to support herself, including hat/coat-checker, hostess, hair sweeper in hair salons, and waitress. She stated that she got fired from all her jobs because of her attitude and was concentrating of becoming a backing singer and mixing demos.

Made her singing debut, age 20. [1990]

Had the nickname "Mirage" in high school, because she never showed up for class.

Founder of Camp Mariah, a serene escape located in Fishkill, New York for inner-city youth to embrace the arts, introduce career opportunities, and build self-esteem.

Used to be a backup singer for Brenda Starr.

Her mother Patricia Hickey is a former mezzo-soprano New York City opera singer and a freelance vocal coach. Patricia was also Mariah's vocal coach. Her father Alfred Roy Carey was an aeronautical engineer.

Her highest note thus far was a G#7 (a few keys from the top of a piano) hit during two live performances of "Emotions" in 1991. Also, she has hit an A2 in her 1998 hit "My All," verifying her 5-octave range. Also, celebrity vocal coach Mark Baxter says that he has heard Mariah sing past the top note on the piano.

Mariah writes and co-writes as well as produces and co-produces her own songs, including all of her number one hits (with the exception of her cover of "I'll Be There").

Her godmother is Patti LaBelle.

Studied over 500 hours of beauty school and hair salon prior to becoming a singer.

The first presents that Mariah indulged herself, were a Ford Mustang convertible and an apartment with a stunning view in New York's Upper East Side on the 21st floor of a high-rise building. She decorated it with her idol's posters (Marilyn Monroe) and lived there with her two cats Ninja and Thompkins.

March 2003: The Guiness Book of World Records awarded her the record for the highest note hit by a human, after she hit the G7# note during a live performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner".

1998: Toured Australia and said the highlight of her trip was swimming with dolphins.

Failed her driver's license test three times.

In the mid 1990's, thanked her mother by buying her a house. She gathered her mother's possessions and put them in the new house, as well as framing photos and putting them on the wall. Then she pretended they were just looking at the house. Mariah says: "It was the most incredible thing I've ever been able to do".
