Lost

Lost Cast

A horrific plane crash stranded 48 survivors on a South Pacific island and plunged them into a complex and frightening mystery in this hit series. Oceanic Flight 815 out of Sidney, Australia, had strayed more than 1,000 miles off course before breaking apart in midair, so no one knew where they were. As they assembled on a beach heroic Dr. Jack Shephard emerged as the natural leader, tending to the injured and calming the rest. Among the principals in the early episodes were spunky Kate, a prisoner in transit who helped Jack; scruffy drug addict and former rock star Charlie (of the band Driveshaft); big fat Hurley who despite his size was quite resourceful; spoiled Shannon; her responsible stepbrother Boone; pregnant Australian Claire; wily former Iraqi army soldier Sayid, an electronics expert; suspicious black dad Michael and his nine-year-old son Walt; angry young Sawyer; standoffish Korean couple Jin and his obedient wife Sun; and an older, mysterious man named Locke who seemed to know a lot more than he let on.

Almost as soon as they organized a camp strange crashing noises were heard coming from the forest. They began to cautiously expolore, encountering evidence of murderous unseen creatures, shooting a polar bear and finding a Frenchwoman, Danielle, who had been stranded for years and who gave them cryptic warnings about a powerful, malevolent colony of "Others" living elsewhere on the island. The island also yielded a seemingly endless supply of weapons, supplies and mysterious clues. At the end of the season Michael, Walt, Sawyer and Jin tried to leave on a raft but were intercepted by the Others, who abducted Walt and sunk the raft; and Locke and Jack discovered a sealed steel hatch in the jungle, which they blew open, revealing a ladder descending into the blackness below.

In season two, which began 45 days after the crash, the hatch was found to lead to a 1970s-style scientific bunker, still operational, apparently part of a network of such bunders on the island. They had been constructed by the DHARMA initiative, funded by the Hanso Foundation, part of a scientific research project designed to avert some type of world cataclysm. The survivors also found other survivors from the tail section of the plane ("tailies"), led by Ana Lucia, and fought running battles with the Others who appeared to be led by ruthless Benjamin Linu (aka Henry Gale). Michael rescued Walt and was allowed to leave the island after he betrayed Jack, Kate and Sawyer to the Others. At the end of the season something went haywire in the underground bunker ("The Swan Station"), which imploded whereupon the entire island was enveloped by a purple light anda loud, ominous humming sound.

In season three (68 days after the crash) Kate and Sawyer escaped from the Others as Jack was forced to perform an operation on Ben under the watchful eye of his assistant Juliet. Other DHARMA bunkers were attacked, and several survivors and Others were killed. Among those who had perished to date were Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia and Libby. Mr. Eko was slammed to death by a ferocious "smoke monster" that apparently guarded the island and Charlie was drowned in the season finale while trying to disable an underwater jamming station that was preventing a rescue signal from escaping the island. Throughout these adventures there were constant flashbacks to the earlier live of the survivors, revealing their motivations, secrets and in some cases past connections with each other.

Lost was filmed on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, which, together with its large cast and elaborate special effects, made it one of the most expensive series on television.
