Up Close With Liv Ullmann Actress Liv Ullmann Liv Ullmann

Are there any film performances greater than those given by Liv Ullmann for Swedish director Ingmar Bergman? Not just the magnificent series from Persona (1966) to Hostsonaten (1978) (Autumn Sonata), which also takes in Vergtimmen (1967) (Hour of the Wolf), Skammen (1968) (The Shame), En Passion (1969) (The Passion of Anna), Viskningar och Rop (1972) (Cries and Whispers), Scener ur ett aktenskap (1973) (Scenes from a Marriage), Ansikte mot ansikte (1975) (Face to Face), and The Serpent's Egg (1977), but also the late TV masterpiece Saraband (2003). The Norwegian actress is uniformly superb in these movies, her beautiful, sensuous, serious face framed in revealing close-up as it expresses the many nuances of the human tragedy as envisaged by the writer/director who was her onetime lover and father of her daughter, author Linn Ullmann. The wordless role of the actress struck dumb by the horrors of the modern world in Persona is arguably the most eloquent of all. In real life, Ullmann gives the impression of being surprisingly jolly, and id much given to laughter.

Although she has had a distingushed theatrical career, Ullmann's other films are mostly minor compared with her work with Bergman. She was impressive in Jan Troell's Utvandrarna (1970) (The Emigrants), for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress; Nybyggarna (1972) (The New Land); and Zandy's Bride (1974). Nevertheless, she floundered in unworthy English-language fare such as Pope Joan (1972), Lost Horizon (1973), and The Abdication (1974). Indeed, her finest recent work has been as director, most notably of the Bergman-scripted Trolosa (2000) (Faithless), where she proved fully equal to the uncompromising, unsentimental sensibility of the master.

The older one gets in this profession, the more people there are with whom one would never work again.

On solitude: Sometimes it is less hard to wake up feeling lonely when you are alone than wake up feeling lonely when you are with someone.

On experience: What I have always loved most in men is imperfection. I get moved by the wrinkles on the throat of a man. It makes me love him more. I think it is sad that more women don't take the chance that maybe men will be moved by seeing the chin a little less firm than it used to be, that a man will be more in love with his wife because he remembers who she was and sees who she is and thinks, God, isn't that lovely that this happened to her. And be moved by life telling its story there.

Was offered by Brian De Palma the role of "Kate Miller" in Dressed to Kill (1980), but turned it down on account of the violence of the theme and having a young daughter.

Father died during a brain operation when the actress was six.
