Actress Lily Tomlin Dolly Parton,Lily Tomlin,Jane Fonda Nine To Five Lily Tomlin on Laugh-In

Lily Tomlin has been such a chameleon that no one role epitomizes the breadth of her talent for drilling inside disparate personalities and conveying their core. To call her a comedienne would be to overlook her dramatic roles, yet even in the lightest vehicles she manages to impart something of human behavior, even if the part doesn't call for it.

Tomlin attended Wayne State University and honed her stand-up skills in nightclubs. She debuted on TV in The Garry Moore Show (1958) and later joined the ensemble cast of Rowan * Martin's Laugh-In (1969-1973), to which she contributed some of her signature characters: the wisecracking five-year-old Edith Ann and the nasal-voiced officious telephone operator Ernestine.

She made an auspicious movie debut among the crowd of characters in Robert Altman's Nashville (1975) as the mother of deaf children, followed by a sterlign appearance alongside Art Carney as a pair of mismatched shamuses in The Late Sho (1977). A string of less successful starring vehicles followed: Moment by Moment (1979) and The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981). Nonetheless, Tomlin was impressive alongside Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda in the feminist farce Nine to Five (1980), and alongside Steve Martin in All of Me (1984). A decade of TV and stage work followed, notably as the presidential secretary Deborah Fiderer in The West Wing (2002-2006), although she also filmed her award-winning theatrical production The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (1991). She worked again with Altman in Short Cuts (1993) and in A Prairie Home Companion (2006). Of Tomlin's latest appearances, her role in the metaphysical comedy I Heart Huckabees (2004) is a standout.

Why is it that when we talk to God we're said to be praying but when God talks to us we're schizophrenic?

If you read a lot of books, you're considered well-read. But if you watch a lot of TV, you're not considered well-viewed.

Was a pre-med student at Wayne State University before choosing acting as a career.
