His starring role in the epic blockbuster Titanic (1997), still one of the highest grossing film of all time, made him an international icon, but Leonardo DiCaprio had been steadily working up to that success with a number of well-received, risky roles. Born in Los Angeles, of Italian and German descent, DiCaprio's father was a distributor of comic books and his mother a legal secretary. He was called "Leonardo" because his pregnant mother was viewing a Leonardo da Vinci painting at a museum in Italy when she felt her baby kick; she decided to name the baby "Leonardo" after the famous artist.

DiCaprio got his first big break on TV, with a recurring role as a homeless boy on Growing Pains (1991 - 1992) before appearing in a number of acclaimed independent films, including What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) alongside Johnny Depp, and This Boy's Life (1993) with Robert De Niro, the former earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor at just nineteen years old.

The Stylishly reimagined Shakespeare adaptation Romeo + Juliet (1996) made DiCaprio a pinup, but Titanic pushed his profile over the top; he half spoofed his own stardom in a small role in Woody Allen's Celebrity (1998) before taking some time off, focusing on environmental causes and developing various projects. DiCaprio reemerged in Danny Boyle's adaptation of Alex Garland's best seller The Beach (2000), which was poorly received. He has worked with some of Hollywood's biggest directors, including Steven Spielberg on Catch Me If You Can (2002), and most notably Martin Scorsese on a trio of films, Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), and The Departed (2006). DiCaprio garnered his third Oscar Best Actor Nomination for Blood Diamond (2006).

He turned down the role of Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights.

In May 2009, DiCaprio, along with Kate Winslet and director James Cameron, publicly pledged to support the financial future of the last living Titanic survivor, Millvina Dean, after it was reported that she had been forced to sell her mementos to pay for nursing home bills.
