Kevin Spacey As Lex Luthor

Kevin Spacey In The Usual Suspects

Kevin Spacey In Se7en

In high school, Kevin Spacey used to cut class and watch revivals at the NuArt Theater in Santa Monica, California. He also became an able impressionist, and tried doing stand-up comedy. After two years at New York's Julliard School studying theater, he performed on the Broadway stage throughout the 1980s, and gradually emerged in bit parts on TV in shows such as Crime Story (1987) and Wiseguy (1988), and in movies such as Heartburn (1986) and Working Girl (1988).

After a turn in the ensemble cast of Glengarry Glen Ross (1992), Spacey enjoyed one of those magic periods all artists dream about, in which he went from oddball support to leading man. There was Swimming with Sharks (1994), followed by The Usual Suspects (1995), his first Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor, Se7en (1995), and then L.A. Confidential (1997). These four roles proved pivotal to his career, making him ideal for roles as a well-spoken, emotionally controlled, sinister, and calculated personality. He went on to win a second Oscar for the suburban family drama American Beauty (1999), this time for Best Actor. He then tried his hand as film director with Albino Alligator (1996) and Beyond the Sea (2004), and became a popular actor with a grasshopper voice-over in A Bug's Life (1998), a possible alien mental patient in K-PAX (2001), and as Superman's nemesis in Superman Returns (2006). He has continued to do well respected work onstage, and in 2003 became artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre Company in London. Offscreen, Spacey is guarded about his private life, saying, "The less you know about me, the easier it is to convince you that I am that character onscreen. It allows an audience to come into a movie theater and believe I am that person."
