Kenny Rogers With His American Music Award

Kenny Rogers On His Horse

Though often dismissed by critics, Kenny Rogers has had well over 40 years of success with folk pop (with the New Christy Minstrels), mild psychedelia and country rock (with the First Edition) and country-pop ballads (as a solo act).

The First Edition was formed by ex-Minstrels in 1967 and included Mike Settle, Mickey Jones, Terry Williams and Thelma Camacho. The group made its debut at Ledbetter’s in L.A., a club owned by another ex-Minstrel, Randy Sparks. There the group was brought to the attention of musician / comedian Tommy Smothers, who put Rogers and the First Edition on his popular TV show in January 1968. This led to a Reprise contract and the act had its first hit just a month later with the quasi-psychedelic “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In”) (#5). Subsequent hits were in a more countryish vein, like “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town” and the Kingston Trio’s “Reuben James” (#26), both in 1969. More hits followed, including the harder-rocking “Something’s Burning” (#11) and the gospelish “Tell It All Brother” (#17) in 1970. From 1971 to 1973 the First Edition had its own syndicated TV show, “Rollin’ on the River”.

After the breakup of the First Edition, Rogers switched to an MOR-country style and chalked up a string of big hits like “Lucille” (#5, 1977), “The Gambler” (#16, 1979), “Don’t Fall in Love With a Dreamer” (#4, 1980; a duet with Kim Carnes), Lionel Ritchie’s “Lady” (his first #1 hit), “I Don’t Need You” (#3), “Through the Years” (#3, 1982), “Love Will Turn You Around” (#13, 1982), “We’ve Got Tonight” (with Sheena Easton) (#6, 1983), “Islands in the Stream” (with Dolly Parton) (#1, 1983) and “What About Me?” (with Kim Carnes and James Ingram) (#15, 1984).

Between 1977 and 1979 alone, Rogers sold over $100 million worth of records and he soon became a household name. Through the mid-‘80s, Rogers’ record sales cooled somewhat, although he continued to score C&W hits with “Crazy” (#1 C&W, 1984), “Morning Desire” (#1 C&W, 1985), “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” (#1 C&W, 1986), “Twenty Years Ago” (#2 C&W, 1986), “I Prefer the Moonlight” (#2 C&W, 1987) and “The Factory” (#6 C&W, 1988), among others. “Love Will Turn You Around” and “We’ve Got Tonight” went gold; Barry Gibb-produced “Eyes That See in the Dark”, “Twenty Greatest Hits” and “What About Me?” were all certified platinum and “Once Upon a Christmas” sold 2 million copies, but “Something Inside So Strong” did not even make the Top 100 albums chart.

By then Rogers had branched out into other areas with comparable success. In 1980 he began his acting career, starring in a TV movie entitled, “The Gambler”, based on his 1979 hit. Since then he has starred in four more films in the same series, two movie-of-the-week productions as the detective MacShayne and in the feature film “Six Pack” (1982). Since 1979 he has also starred or co-starred in over a dozen television specials. He has published several books of his photography and as an entrepreneur; he collaborated with former Kentucky Fried Chicken CEO John Y. Brown, Jr. in 1991 to start up the restaurant chain Kenny Rogers Roasters. The chicken and ribs chain, which is similar to Boston Market, was famously featured in an episode of the NBC sitcom Seinfeld called "The Chicken Roaster”.

He also hosted a series of documentaries on the Old West for the Arts and Entertainment Network. He participated in USA for Africa and with his manager, Ken Kragen, was a principal leader of the charity effort, Hands Across America in 1986.

By the late ‘90s Rogers had formed his own label, Dreamcatcher Entertainment. His 1999 album “She Rides Wild Horses”, which peaked at #6 C&W, marked his highest chart debut in 15 years. The singles “Buy Me a Rose” (#1 C&W, 2000) and “The Greatest” (#26 C&W, 1999) were successful as well.

He has been very successful, charting more than 70 hit singles across various music genres and topping the country and pop album charts for more than 420 individual weeks in the United States alone.

Two of his albums, The Gambler and Kenny, are featured in the About.com poll of "The 200 Most Influential Country Albums Ever". He was voted the "Favorite Singer of All-Time" in a 1986 joint poll by readers of both USA Today and People. He has received hundreds of awards for both his music and charity work. These include AMAs, Grammys, ACMs and CMAs, as well as a lifetime achievement award for a career spanning six decades in 2003.

Success in recent years include the 2006 album release, “Water & Bridges”, an across the board hit, that peaked at #5 in the Billboard Country Albums sales charts, also charting high in the Billboard 200. The first single from the album, "I Can't Unlove You," was also a chart hit. Remaining a popular entertainer around the world, the following year he completed a tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland telling BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright, his favorite hit of his was "The Gambler".

His success is worldwide. He has played many well-attended concerts in Europe and the Far East, where he has charted numerous singles and albums from the 1970s through to the present day. New Zealand was a big stronghold during his First Edition days.
