Julia Roberts in black dress Up Close With Julia Roberts Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman Julia Roberts sophisticated in white

One of the most recognized faces worldwide, a refreshing beauty with an infectious smile and legs to die for, Julia Roberts has enjoyed huge success in serious and fantasy movies, but her audience loves her best in romantic comedies, where she has had a truly unique effect.

Since first being singled out for her performances in Mystic Pizza and Satisfaction in 1988, Julia Roberts has set an unusually high standard for U.S. actresses, as both popular artist and well-compensated performer. Earning her first Academy Award nomination and her first Golden Globe Award for Steel Magnolias the very next year, she immediately achieved a high level of critical support for her work, allowing her to move from being a strictly youth-driven sensation into her mature career with relative ease. After the massive success of Pretty Woman in 1990, which was accompanied by her second Academy Award nomination and second Golden Globe Award, Roberts also managed a rare feat for someone so young: she became the standard of quality and popularity in U.S. movies, and has been able to maintain this position every year since.

Born in Georgia, she's the sister of Eric Roberts, an actor of some early promise now regularly cast as a villain and from whom she's estranged. She has famously red-brown hair, a wide, hyperbolic, toothy smile, and a large laugh that consumes all listeners. Relatively tall, thin, and not particularly curvy, these boyish attributes have contributed to an extended state of youthfully believable roles - not the ingenue, not the matron - but it's the steely strength beneath the coltish physique that makes Roberts such a rich onscreen personality.

Flatliners (1990) demonstrated her ease with ensemble casts in a tale of overcoming death with unexpected results, and was her first romantic pairing with costar Kiefer Sutherland, a trend that was repeated over the years, although interrupted by her first marriage to singer Lyle Lovett. But it was Sleeping with the Enemy in 1991 that took her previoulsly established central vulnerabilities - slender build, seeming meekness, trusting nature - and turned them on end, as her Sara Walters character overcomes an abusive husband. Known for being beautiful, emotionally expressive, and possessing that indefinable "something" that signifies stardom, she was now also recognized for being a rock beneath the chiffon, and a person of unusual tenacity.

Over the next few years she reaffirmed her box-office appeal in Dying Young, Hook (both 1991), and The Pelican Brief (1993), and suffered her first career misstep with I Love Trouble (1994). Quickly recovering with a return to romantic comedy in Something to Talk About (1995), there followed the little-seen Mary Reilly and Michael Collins (both 1996), after which Roberts became the object of Woody Allen's midlife obsession in Everyone Says I Love You (1996), which was a showcase for her limited, but still true, singing abilities.

Although the late 1990s may be remembered for Y2K anxiety, as evidenced by high-concept sci-fi thrillers (The Matrix, 1990) and weird domestic dramas (American Beauty, 1999), the period may also be remembered as the one of greatest commercial dominance for Roberts, who appeared in a string of hits: My Best Friend's Wedding (1997, Golden Globe nomination), Conspiracy Theory (1997), Stepmom (1998), Notting Hill (1999, Golden Globe nominations), Runaway Bride (1999), and Erin Brockovich (2000), her first Academy Award-winning, and Golden Globe Award-winning, performance. This last movie cemented the actress's position atop the Hollywood hierarchy, and has led to a slowdown in output in favor of home life with cinematographer husband Daniel Moder, her second husband, and their twins.

Roberts continues to be top-draw talent, earning $25 million for Mona Lisa Smile (2003), and mixing baldly commercial fare (Ocean's Eleven, 2001) with more independently-minded work (Full Frontal, 2002; Closer, 2004).

"I'm too tall to be a girl.... I'd say I'm somewhere between a chick and a broad."

Turned down the female lead in Shakespeare in Love (1998).

She once tried out for a part on "All My Children" (1970), but was turned down.

Beat out Sandra Bullock for the role of Maggie Carpenter in Runaway Bride (1999).

At the 2002 Peoples Choice Awards she admitted to being a huge fan of "Days of Our Lives" (1965) and asked to be seated near the cast.

She is a huge fan of actress Aishwarya Rai, whom she once commented on being "The most beautiful woman in the world, more beautiful than any Hollywood actress."

First actress to reach 20 million dollar mark salary (for Erin Brockovich (2000))

"The Alchemist" is one of her favorite books.

An accomplished equestrienne, Julia did her own riding in Runaway Bride (1999).

Turned down leading role in Sleepless in Seattle (1993) which went to Meg Ryan.

Big fan of actress Katharine Hepburn.

Turned down the Sharon Stone role in Basic Instinct (1992).
