Jonny Depp at the Teen Choice Awards Johnny Depp Poses For The Camera Johnny Depp Soaking Up The Sun Johnny Depp Sporting A Fedora

Johnny Depp is the ultimate cool loser, the outsider who effortlessly combines sex appeal and box-office success with critical esteem and street credibility. He dropped out of school when he was fifteen years old, and joined a series of garage bands with the aim of making a name in rock music. But it was a visit to Los Angeles in the early 1980s that was to change his career path. By chance, he met actor Nicolas Cage, who advised him to turn to acting. Depp went on to make his movie debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

Keen on making (to put it mildly) risky choices that have shown him to be one of Hollywood's most versatile actors, Depp shed an earlier cute image and linked himself in the 1990s with rogue auteurs such as John Waters in Cry-Baby (1990), Jim Jarmusch in Dead Man (1995), Terry Gilliam in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), Roman Polanski in The Ninth Gate (1999), and soul mate Tim Burton in Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005). These affiliations gave him a rebel status, and both his public life, filled with supermodels and rock singers, and his work seemed consistent with that image. Depp specializes in playing relentlessly existential, occasionally ironic, aloof romantics whose surface bohemian amorality is underpinned by a deep sense of commitment and melancholy.

This has culminated in Depp's most successful role to date, as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean (2003,2006,2007) trilogy, a part that has launched him into celebrity status without compromising his artistic integrity. Based on Rolling Stone Keith Richards, Sparrow symbolizes a combination of populism and rebellion - the kind of pirate attitude that also defines Depp himself.

Anything I've done up till 27 May, 1999 was kind of an illusion, existing without living. My daughter, the birth of my daughter, gave me life.

I'm shy, paranoid, whatever word you want to use. I hate fame. I've done everything I can to avoid it.

Arrested for being in a fight with paparazzis in front of a restaurant in London. [January 1999]

Was the guitarist in a band called The Kids.

Got his "Betty Sue" tattoo May 31, 1988.

Lists British comedy "The Fast Show" (1994) -- renamed "Brilliant" for US television -- as his favorite TV program of all time.

Purchased Bela Lugosi's Los Angeles home.

Great admirer of Marlon Brando. He was also good friends with the legendary actor, who described Depp as one of the greatest actors of his generation.

Turned down the role of Jack Traven in action hit Speed (1994)

Turned down the role of Bruce Banner in Hulk (2003).
