John Travolta, with wife Kelly Preston and son Jett John Travolta Gives The Thumbs Up John Travolta Stars In Michael Actor John Travolta

A one-time sweat hog on the TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter (1975-1979), a punk in Carrie (1976), and the essential working-class ethnic wannabe in the smash hit Saturday Night Fever (1977), his first Best Actor Academy Award nomination, John Travolta emerged from the efflorescence of U.S. cinema in the 1970s as the poster boy for the triumph of youth. His Danny Zuko in Grease (1978) showed off his singing voice, beyond his already established dance moves. He performed several songs on the Grease soundtrack album, which went on to sell more than 10 million copies. His occasional forays into adult material such as Blow Out (1981) demonstrated acting muscles on the man otherwise known for being cleft-chinned and handsome.

But sometime after Perfect (1985) and Look Who's Talking (1989), Travolta fell out of popular favor. Beached and approaching forty, the comebackkid regenerated his career and once again became a superstar with Pulp Fiction (1994), his second Best Actor Oscar nod. Since then he has done high-concept pap such as Broken Arrow (1996), successful big-budget movies such as Swordfish (2001), and a handful of limited-appeal experiments, including She's So Lovely (1997).

Also known for being a Scientologist, one of Travolta's career missteps was Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Years 3000 (2000), which was based on a science-fiction work by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Generally, he's been savvy and attuned to the masses, collecting respectable credits in films such as Get Shorty (1995), Phenomenon (1996), The General's Daughter (1999), Basic (2003), and Ladder 49 (2004). Offscreen, Travolta is married to actress Kelly Preston. His big passion is flying, and he is a licensed jet pilot.
