Jeff Bridges (Black And White) Actor Jeff Bridges Jeff Bridges Double Shot Jeff Bridges In Brown Top Hat

Son of Hollywood titan Lloyd Bridges, and brother of actor Beau Bridges, Jeff Bridges began acting on Sea Hunt (1958), a TV series centered on his father. TV jobs and movie walk-ons followed. Then, aged only twenty-two, Bridges landed the plum part of Duane Jackson in Peter Bogdanovich's adaptation of the larry McMurtry novel The Last Picture Show (1971). Nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and considered a force to be reckoned with, he worked with Clint Eastwood on Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974), another Oscar nod, and tackled a giant gorilla in the remake of King Kong (1976).

Then Bridges took on a pair of unusual roles: the Michael Cimino epic Western Heaven's Gate (1980) and the Disney-inspired Tron (1982). By the mid-1980s, he settled into a groove of charismatic performances in Starman (1984) and Jagged Edge (1985) before reprising his Last Picture Show character Duane Jackson in Texasville (1990) and becoming another version of himself, this time both more experimental and entertaining. The Fisher King (1991) illustrates his style, which includes Fearless (1993), The Big Lebowski (1998), and even the dramatic turns of The Contender (2000) and Seabiscuit (2003). American Heart (1992) and Lebowski demonstrate that his strengths lie as much within independent movies as in mainstream Hollywood. Having been happily married for decades, an oddity in his field, and having now become believably sexy, even comfortable in his skin, Bridges is an Old Hollywood star in New Hollywood: suave without arrogance, talented without too much attitude, able and convincing. He is also an accomplished cartoonist and photographer. His drawings appeared in The Door in the Floor (2004), in which he plays a children's novelist.

A large part of acting is just pretending. You get to work with these other great make-believers, all making believe as hard as they can. What I learned most from my father wasn't anything he said; it was just the way he behaved. He loved his work so much that, whenever he came on set, he brought that with him, and other people rose to it.

Is a talented guitarist.

Enjoys cigars, and smokes a couple every day.

Served in the United States Coast Guard.

Is a big fan of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys.

Auditioned for the part of 'Cpt. Willard' in Apocalypse Now (1979), as did his good friend Nick Nolte.

He is a big fan of actors Robert Ryan and Lee Marvin. Favorite movie is Billy Budd (1962).

Roles Turned Down:

The role of Redfoot, the LA fence in The Usual Suspects (1995).

The role of Bobby Grady in Crimes of Passion (1984).

Was director Taylor Hackford's original choice for the lead role in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), but he had to turn it down due to a busy schedule

The lead role of 'Jack Cates' in 48 Hrs. (1982), because he didn't want to do a simple cop movie. The role went to Nick Nolte.

Jacknife (1989) was developed as a vehicle for Bridges. He turned it down, and Robert De Niro took on the lead role.

The role of 'Snake Plissken' in Escape from New York (1981) that went to 'Kurt Russell'.

The lead in Love Story (1970). His brother Beau Bridges was the director's first choice. Both turned it down.

The role of Hooper in Jaws (1975).

A part in The California Kid (1974) (TV).

The part of Zachariah in Zachariah (1971) to work on The Last Picture Show (1971).
