Jackie Gleason Jackie Gleason The Honeymooners Jackie Gleason The Hustler 1961

Jackie Gleason is so identified with TV and his iconic character of Ralph Kramden and the antics featured on The Honeymooners (1955-1956) that it's easy to forget he possessed film credits. He appeared with virtually no professional success in nine films released in 1941 and 1942. They include two Warner Brothers releases: All Through the Night (1942) with Humphrey Bogart and Larceny, Inc. (1942) with Edward G. Robinson. He capped off this period with two releases featuring the Glenn Miller orchestra, which included Gleason playing the bass: Orchestra Wives (1942) and Springtime in the Rockies (1942).

Thereafter, Gleason rose to TV stardom, initially as the replacement for William Bendix on The Life of Riley (1949), then as the host of the Du Mont network Cavalcade of Stars (1950). CBS wooed him on board in 1952. The Kramden character first appeared on Cavalcade, but Gleason brought him over to CBS's The Jackie Gleason Show, with Art Carney as his sidekick, Ed Norton, and various women as his wife, Alice, until Audrey Meadows became identified with the part.

This meteoric success led to achievements in other media. Gleason received a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1960, appearing in Take Me Along. Hollywood beckoned once again, as Robert Rossen cast Gleason as the pool champion Minnesota Fats in The Hustler (1961), for which he received an Academy Award nomination. He followed up these triumphs with the lauded dramatic performance in Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962). Gleason ended his long career with the commercially successful trio of Burt Reynolds's Smokey and the Bandit movies (1977, 1980, and 1983) and last appeared as an aging deadbeat father alongside Tom Hanks in Nothing in Common (1986). The film proved to be Gleason's final film role, as he was suffering from colon cancer, liver cancer, and thrombosed hemorrhoids during production.

Gleason was a heavy drinker, and smoked five packs of cigarettes a day. Years of those habits finally caught up with him in 1986, when he was diagnosed with diabetes and phlebitis, but he knew his condition was more serious. “I won’t be around much longer,” he told his daughter at dinner one evening after a day of filming Nothing In Common. A year later, on June 24, 1987 Gleason died peacefully, at his Florida home. He was 71 years old.

Gleason is interred in an outdoor mausoleum at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery in Miami, Florida. At the base is the inscription of one of his catchphrases, "And Away We Go."

Drinking removes warts and pimples. Not from me. But from those I look at.

How sweet it is!"

Grandfather of actor Jason Patric.

Had an interest in the occult as well as an extensive collection of books on the paranormal.

Once said that Orson Welles bestowed his "The Great One" nickname upon him.

On August 2000, cable television station TvLand unveiled an eight-foot bronze statue of Gleason as Ralph Kramden. The statue was placed in the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.

The Miami Beach Auditorium was re-named the Jackie Gleason Theater and is located on 17th Street and Washington Avenue on South Beach.

Was a mentor and frequent drinking buddy of Frank Sinatra. It was Gleason who first introduced Sinatra to Jack Daniels whiskey, which became Sinatra's signature drink.
