Actor Hugh Grant Hugh Grant Wearing Tuxedo Up Close With Hugh Grant Hugh Grant In Sunglasses

Born in London and a graduate in English from Oxford University, one of Hugh Grant's earliest films was the Merchant Ivory production Maurice (1987), instantly making him one of the most recognizable names in British independent films. He subsequently starred in movies as quirky and diverse as Ken Russell's The Lair of the White Worm (1988) and Roman Polanski's Bitter Moon (1992), and reunited with the Merchant Ivory team in The Remains of the Day (1993) before Mike Newell's smash hit comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) made him an international household name. A memorable turn in Ang Lee's Jane Austen adaptation Sense and Sensibility (1995) bolstered his reputation as the thinking man's romantic lead, until an embarassing arrest while engaged with a prostitute in 1995 threatened to bury his career in controversy.

Taking the high road, Grant charmed his way back into the public's good graces, as well as those of the studios, starring in such hits as Notting Hill (1999) before underscoring his instinct for playing the cad in Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) and About a Boy (2002). He reunited with Four Weddings and Notting Hill director Richard Curtis for Love Actually (2003) where his performance as a boogying British prime minister who falls in love with the tea girl confirmed him as a master of comedy and endeared him forever to international movie audiences. His recent performances in Two Weeks Notice (2002); a sequel to Bridget Jones, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004); a role parodying snide TV's American Idol host Simon Cowell in American Dreamz (2006); and a singing part in Music and Lyrics (2007) were uninspired, but it will take more than that to knock Grant off his throne as the modern-day Cary Grant, and it could be that his best is yet to come.

I just don't believe in love at first sight any more, even though I've based my whole career on the concept. In my experience, power, money and influence always attract the opposite sex. It's something that I've always exploited - with good results.

He was arrested in Los Angeles, California, for lewd conduct after police checking into a "suspicious parked car" found him with Divine Brown, a prostitute, in the front seat (it was his car). He pleaded no contest and got a $1,180 fine and two years' probation. [1995]

Speaks French fluently.

Often described as a "golfing addict". He also can play cricket, soccer, tennis and snooker. He has stated that his favorite sport to watch is ladies' tennis.

Salary

Two Weeks Notice (2002) $12,500,000

Mickey Blue Eyes (1999) $7,500,000

Notting Hill (1999) $7,500,000

Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) $100,000
