Cast Of How I Met Your Mother How I Met Your Mother How I Met Your Mother - Cast The Cast Of How I Met Your Mother

Friendship, love and romance were the running themes of this sitcom. Ted Moseby (Josh Radnor), Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segal) and Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) were best friends in their late twenties but at decidedly different stages of their dating lives. Ted, an architect, was looking for the perfect woman; Marshall, a second-year law student, was engaged to kindergarten teacher Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), his soul mate since college; and Barney was a fastidious womanizer with a penchant for one-night stands. Ted, Marshall and Lily shared an apartment on Manhattan’s upper West Side.

In the first episode Ted met Robin Sherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), a TV reporter for Metro News 1 and immediately fell in love but, after failing to make a romantic relationship work, they remained friends and she became an integral member of the group. In the spring Ted was dating Victoria (Ashley Williams), his first serious relationship since the series began, but that didn’t work out either. The season ended with Ted finally convincing Robin they should try dating again and Marshall depressed because he had broken up with Lily over her decision to spend the summer at an art program in San Francisco.

That fall Lily returned from San Francisco and her relationship with Marshall was pretty strained; however eventually they got back together and were married in the second season finale.

In season 3 Robin dated a number of men first was Gael from Argentina, followed by a single dad then she reconnected with an old flame who broke her heart again. Lily and Marshall had their first Thanksgiving as a married couple. Barney ran into the woman who took his virginity and discovered that his performance with her was poor, which caused him to loose his prowess with women and he headed to the Victoria's Secret Fall Fashion Show party to try to get it back. Stella felt she was finally ready to get intimate with Ted and since his split with Ted; Barney was seeking a replacement Bro. Abby and Barney decided they both hated Ted and chose the bar to flaunt their romance in front of him. Ted re-evaluated his life and his relationship with Stella after a close call with death from an accident and proposed to her.

In Season 4 Stella accepted Ted’s proposal and wound up leaving him at the altar. Ted and Robin decided to be "friends with benefits" to end conflicts around the apartment and Barney tried to fix their problems so they would stop sleeping together. Towards the end of the season, Ted lost his job and started his own architectural firm out of his apartment. In the final show of the fourth season, Ted was attempting to work all night on a project for his new firm while Marshall was doing his best to lure him to the roof for a surprise 31st birthday party.

Season 5 (2009 – 2010), which is currently airing found Lily had devised the perfect plan to break Robin and Barney up and called in the assistance of Robin’s famous friend Alan Thicke to accomplish the deed.

The series was set in the year 2030 where an older, off-screen Ted (Bob Saget) was telling his teenage children how he met their mother and all of the action was shown in flashback. Initially the kids were shown in the opening and closing remarks but, although the narration remained, they were dropped early in 2006. The show was created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays.

An on going joke in the show is that nobody ever finds out what Barney's job is. Every time the gang ask him he sarcastically replies, 'Please'!

Another of the show's recurring gags is, whenever somebody says a phrase or word that resembles a military rank (eg. "Major buzz-kill") both Ted and Robin (and in some instances Barney, Marshall and Lily join in) salute and repeat whatever is said as though addressing a military officer ("Major Buzzkill").

Barney Stinson was named after a heroin peddler in the James Ellroy book 'LA Confidential'.

Manages to get the balance of cuddliness and snark just right. Reviewed by: Maureen Ryan of The Chicago Tribune.

The format is unusual, and the ending of the premiere nicely surprising - but the element that pushes this show into the potential hit category is Neil Patrick Harris. Reviewed by: David Hinckley of The New York Daily News.

"How I Met Your Mother" may not break any comedic ground, but it's the sort of comfortable, reliable hitter CBS needs on Monday nights. Reviewed by: Melanie McFarland of The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Parents need to know that this entertaining, refreshingly kooky sitcom is focused on love and relationships, with a large dose of sexual-themed humor. There’s plenty of flirting and innuendo, especially from one character who constantly tries to seduce women and then brags about his conquests. One of the main sets is a bar, where the gang gathers to drink and talk. Expect some swearing, including "damn," "bitch," and "ass." Reviewed by: Common Sense Media.
