Indiana Jones - Harrison Ford

A Younger Harrison Ford

It's hard to describe the appeal of Harrison Ford. He's handsome, but not devastatingly so. He's tall, quiet, and reactive. Built like an athlete, he wears a scar across his chin that dates to a car accident in early adulthood. He carries himself well and he smiles in a way that seems honest and warm. In many ways, his persona doesn't involve deception, concealment, or any of the other masks of many performers who see their purpose in undertaking other personalities as the very heart of their craft. It may be that Ford is always playing verisons of himself, reminding us of simpler times when a few reliable heroes stayed within the boundaries of their own comfort and ease.

Having been involved with two of the most profitable movie franchises ever, Star Wars and the Indiana Jones trilogy, Ford is also one of the industry's more reliable commercial talents. That a degree of this charm has waned in recent years is partly because Ford is known for action - but being an action star beyond your sixtieth birthday isn't as believable as it once was, given the demands of modern audiences.

Groomed in feature film bit parts (A Time for Killing, 1967; Journey to Shiloh, 1968) and TV appearances (The Virginian, 1967; Gunsmoke, 1972-1973), he was first noticed playing Bob Falfa in American Graffiti in 1973. That he was noticed by George Lucas in particular resulted in Ford's being cast in the pivotal role of Han Solo in the 1977 landmark, Star Wars.

Then, as if he had always been a star, Ford vaulted through the follow-up work (Force 10 from Navarone, 1978; The Frisco Kid, 1979) before reprising Solo in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and starring as Indy in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). Later came more success with Solo and Indy, a spate of other popular titles (Witness, 1985; Patriot Games, 1992; The Fugitive, 1993; Air Force One, 1997), a few commercial failures (The Mosquito Coast, 1986; Frantic, 1988; K-19; The Widowmaker, 2002), and at least one overlooked classic (Blade Runner, 1982).

Now a sometime recluse, living part of each year on his Jackson Hole ranch in Wyoming, Ford's best years may still be ahead of him.

I don't think I've mastered anything. I'm still wrestling with the same frustrations, the same issues, the same problems as I always did. That's what life is like.

You know you are getting old when all the names in your black book have "MD" after them.

Was a master carpenter before becoming a movie star, a craft he still does as a hobby.

Private pilot, single engine fixed wing and helicopter.

Listed as one of 50 people barred from entering Tibet. Disney clashed with Chinese officials over the film Kundun (1997), which Ford's second wife, Melissa Mathison, wrote. [19 December 1996]

Has a scar on his chin which he got in 1968 when he tried to "buckle up" while already driving, and lost control of the car.

Turned down the romance-action film Proof of Life (2000) (the 'Russell Crowe ' role), the summer-blockbuster The Perfect Storm (2000) (the George Clooney role), and finally, another summer-blockbuster, the war-epic The Patriot (2000) (the Mel Gibson role). Ford has said "The Patriot" was "too violent" for his tastes, especially considering that many children were killed and endangered throughout the film. He told People Magazine that he also turned down the film because he felt the story was too simple: "The Revolutionary War boiled down to one man seeking revenge".

Replaced Kevin Costner in Air Force One (1997).

Listed in the 2001 Guinness Book of Records as the richest male actor.

Turned down the role of Judge Wakefield in the movie Traffic (2000).

Honored for his work with the environment, Ford was asked to name a new breed of butterfly. He named it after his daughter, Georgia

Has a species of Central American ant (Peidole harrisonfordi) and spider (Calponia Harrisonfordi) named after him in honor of his conservation work.

October 2003: Had surgery on a torn rotator cuff.

Was offered the part of Mike Stivic on "All in the Family" (1971), but turned it down, citing the bigotry of Archie Bunker was too offensive.

His favorite record is "On the Edge", by his favorite artist, Patrick Rondat.

Turned down the role of Dr. Curtis McCabe in Vanilla Sky (2001).

Was offered the role of Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park (1993) but turned it down. The role went to Sam Neill instead.

Has named Gregory Peck and Gary Cooper as his favorite actors. Two of his favorite movies are the anti-McCarthyism western High Noon (1952), for which Cooper won his second Oscar, and the civil rights drama To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), for which Peck won his only Oscar.
