Hardy Kruger first appeared on screen as a fifteen year old in Junge Adler (1944).

His career ground to a halt when he was drafted into the German infantry in 1945. It is said that during the war he was taken prisoner by the Americans but managed to escape successfully on the third attempt. He did not take up acting again until 1949.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Kruger directed a number of European TV documentaries.

He is the father of actors Christiane Kruger and Hardy Kruger Jr.
