Country star BillyRayCyrus, best known for his monster 1992 hit “Achy Breaky Heart”, played a sitcom dad to his own daughter Miley Stewart / Hannah Montana (Miley Cyrus) in this sunny Disney ‘tween comedy. Miley Stewart was an energetic eighth grader at Seaview Middle School in Malibu, California, who led a secret life as pop sensation Hannah Montana.

When classes were over she donned a blond wig and was swept into a world of limos, celebrities and huge concerts (talk about a teen fantasy!). Incredibly nobody knew her secret except for widower dad Robbie, who was her manager and songwriter (his disguise on the road was a simple mustache), big brother Jackson (Jason Earles), who was more interested in scams and girls and her two best friends, hyperactive Lilly Truscott (Emily Osment) and dorky Oliver Oken (Mitchel Musso). Stories were filled with school rivalries and crushes, interspersed with concert footage of Hannah. Dad, it was revealed, had once been a popular singer too (wink, wink – nudge, nudge).

Disney used the popular series to launch a real music career for young Miley. Her first album, a sound track of songs from the series (on the Disney label, of course), went to number one on the Billboard charts in the fall of 2006.

The fourth and final season (2009 – 2010) is currently airing.

This series became such a big hit for the Disney Channel that it led to live concert tours, a line of clothing for little girls, and the production of Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009).

Mitchel Musso wore his hair below his ears throughout the show's run in order to hide his earrings.

To prevent it from falling, the wig's fringe is glued to Miley Cyrus's forehead.

Every episode's title references a famous song.

Robbie Stewart: Ow, my achey, breaky back!

Miley Stewart: It was as easy as findin' a mullet at a trucker's convention.

Parents need to know that within the context of silly, preteen humor, main characters face normal adolescent challenges: How do I fit in? Will my friends like me if I'm different? How do I get her/him to notice me? Girls and boys talk about each other in the context of romantic relationships, dating, and kissing, but no sex. Tweens will certainly notice the glitz and glamour of the pop princess, but her actual appeal is how she faces everyday challenges in this dynamic part of development. With country music legend Billy Ray Cyrus and his adorable daughter Miley as the stars, this show has a lot of promise. Billy Ray and Miley convey a great daddy-daughter relationship, and both add humor as well as a touch of sentimentality to the show. Emily Osment (Lilly) and Mitchel Musso (Oliver) deliver solid and contributing characters as well. However, some characters and themes in the show go overboard (but that's to be expected in the Disney kid/tween genre). Reviewed by: Carey Bryson of kidstvmovies.about.com
