The daughter of actress Blythe Danner and movie producer Bruce Paltrow, Gwyneth Paltrow was born in Los Angeles. After attending the Spence School in New York, she moved to California, where she went to the University of California in Santa Barbara, majoring in art history. She soon left, realizing that she wanted to follow her mother on to the stage. And she did so, literally, and began acting in the Williamstown Theatre play Picnic, with her mother. A few small roles led to a haunting, harrowing, supporting turn in Se7en (1995) alongside Brad Pitt, with whom she became romantically linked at the time. Her title role of Emma Woodhouse in the Jane Austen adaptation Emma (1996) and Sliding Doors (1998) revealed her abilities with a British accent and, along with countless independent films, her indefatigable work ethic. That hard work paid off with her being cast as Viola in Shakespeare in Love (1998), for which Paltrow was awarded the Best Actress Oscar.

After a quirky performance as a depressed writer in Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums (2001), and a sentimental comedic lead in Shallow Hal (2001), as well as a very public relationship and breakup with actor Ben Affleck, Paltrow’s work schedule slowed considerably as she focused on other endeavors: namely, new boyfriend Chris Martin, lead singer of the British rock band Coldplay. The couple live in London, where she pursues a detoxified lifestyle and is a fan of yoga. Their romance and subsequent marriage overshadowed the release of films such as View from the Top (2003), Sylvia (2003), and Proof (2005), as did the birth of her two children, Apple and Moses, but ignore any threats of early retirement. An actress of Paltrow’s considerable talents should never be counted out.
