Goldie Hawn Goldie Hawn On Laugh-In Goldie Hawn As a Maid On Laugh-In Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell

Now more than sixty years old and seemingly retired, Goldie Hawn has left behind an appealing and groundbreaking filmography. Yet Hawn started out as a dancer. She began taking ballet and tap dance lessons at the age of three, and went on to dance in the chorus of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo production of The Nutcracker (1955). She studied drama at American University in Washington, D.C., but dropped out to run a ballet school. By 1964, she was working as a professional dancer. Her good looks and talent led her to start out on TV with small parts, and soon she was cast as a pretty laugh machine on the comedy show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In (1968-1970). Her film debut in Cactus Flower (1969) alongside Walter Matthau and Ingrid Bergman won her a come-from-nowhere Oscar for her supporting performance.

In the early 1970s, Hawn continued doing comedy in such films as Butterflies Are Free (1972), Shampoo (1975), and Foul Play (1978), but also exposed a more serious side in The Sugarland Express (1974). With Private Benjamin (1980), the two halves collided in a singular role concerning a high-maintenance woman who joins the army only to find herself truly remade through discipline and hard work. Four years on, the twice-married and divorced Hawn made her first film with Kurt Russell, Swing Shift (1984). The pair began an offscreen romance and have been partners ever since. Her mature work has largely stuck to the tried and true: she's done mostly comedy such as Wildcats (1986), The First Wives Club (1996), and Everyone Says I Love You (1996), mixed with an occasional dramatic thriller such as Deceived (1991). Hawn's three children have followed her on to the big screen: Oliver Hudson, Kate Hudson, and Wyatt Russell.
