Gilbert Roland Young Mexican Actor Gilbert Roland Gilbert Roland

Dark, moustached, and debonair Mexican actor Gilbert Roland was a popular presence in Hollywood movies for 50 years without ever becoming a major star. He moved with his family to the United States with the onset of the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1911. Roland trained as a bullfighter before entering movies at the age of twenty; he was noticed by a Hollywood scout and asked to appear as an extra. He decided he wanted a career on the big screen and changed his name in homage to movie stars John Gilbert and Ruth Roland. Cast opposite Clara Bow in The Plastic Age (1925), he had a dashing allure that made an instant impression both on audiences and on Bow, who became his lover. He was also teamed on four occasions with Norma Talmadge; their affair led to Talmadge's divorce from movie producer husband Joseph Schenck. But after the divorce, Talmadge changed her mind about marriage with Gilbert and wed performer George Jessel instead.

While many actors suffered from the transition to sound, Roland's ability to speak Spanish proved an advantage. Early talkies were often shot in various languages for different markets and Roland made several Spanish-language U.S. movies, including Resurreccion (1931) with fellow Mexican star Lupe Velez. In Hollywood, Roland's accent seemed to make him simultaneously attractive to audiences and difficult to cast, and he often appeared as a Frenchman. Through the later 1930s and 1940s, he alternated minor roles in major films with B-movie leads. He then appeared in a series of Westerns as the popular character "The Cisco Kid." In 1954 he was still considered dashing enough to put Jane Russell over his shoulder and carry her away in The French Line (1954).

"Death comes soon enough so why kill yourself crying about it?"

Gilbert Roland chose his screen name in homage to his two favorite movie stars, John Gilbert and Ruth Roland.
