When things are bad, it's the best time to reinvent yourself.

I didn't come from a background where I saw a lot of loving couples. All my aunts and uncles were either split up or fighting all the time. The only healthy relationships I saw were on TV.

I had a very difficult childhood. I was surrounded by people who had both parents, which made me feel different. Having a bit of a rougher existence early on, it made me appreciate the work ethic that my grandparents instilled in me.

It's not even about black and white anymore, because so many people are from mixed backgrounds and mixed ethnicities, and it's just a great time to be able to pull all that together.

When I look at the Gospel, I see how it is speaking to me at this time. I see how to be to others and it helps.

George Lopez is an American comedian and actor, one of the most prominent Mexican-Americans from within the Latino communities to be recognized in mainstream North American popular culture. He is perhaps best known for starring in his own produced television sitcom show entitled George Lopez.

Lopez became a stand-up comedian using his Mexican-American heritage as an attraction to Mexicans. Much of his comedy is based on his experiences in childhood, and that of the Mexican-American community in general.

He was deserted by his father when he was two months old and by his mother when he was 10 years old,but was raised by his maternal grandmother, Benita Gutierrez, a factory worker, and step-grandfather, Refugio Gutierrez, a construction worker.

In 1999, Lopez hosted a major morning radio show for Clear Channel Communications in Los Angeles. He was the first Latino to have headlined the keystone morning radio slot on an English-language station in LA—the nation’s top radio market.

Sandra Bullock gave George his break into TV stardom with her own production company when she sent out a scout to check the clubs for Latino talent because there were no Hispanic shows on TV.

He has a philanthropic organization called The Lopez Foundation.

Lopez wrote an autobiography entitled Why You Crying, which was published by the Touchstone/Fireside division of Simon & Schuster, and placed in the New York Times Bestsellers top twenty. The book is co-written by Emmy Award winning writer and sportscaster Armen Keteyian.

He was one of the many witnesses in the Michael Jackson trial.

April 25, 2005: Had a successful kidney transplant surgery using an organ donated by his wife, Ann Serrano.
