25 April 1972, Castelldefels, Barcelona, Spain (suicide) Sanders told David Niven in 1937, that he intended to commit suicide when he got older. George Sanders and wife Zsa Zsa Gabor George Sanders George Sanders as Mr Freeze in Batman TV Series

Born in Russia to British parents, George Sanders returned to England with his family on the eve of the Russian Revolution. Educated at a private school in Brighton, Sanders worked in the textile and tobacco industries before becoming an advertising copywriter. He had a beautiful baritone voice and took up a colleague's suggestion to switch careers to acting, starting out as a chorus boy in London't West End. He went on to cabaret, radio, and theatrical understudy, finally making an impact in the film Find the Lady (1936). After a quick succession of roles in British films, Sanders went to Hollywood and turned his cultivated tones to series sleuths The Saint and The Falcon.

Sanders had one of the movies' best voices, suited to Wildean epigrams such as The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945), and languid tiger growls as Shere Khan in The Jungle Book (1967). A sought-after support player, he specialized in cads such as Jack Favell in Rebecca (1940). His career high came as the acidic critic Addison DeWitt in All About Eve (1950), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Director Albert Lewin, who cast Sanders as Lord Henry Wotton in Dorian Gray, combed literature to find him perfect roles such as the caddish journalist in The Private Affairs of Bel Ami (1947). He is creepily good as a bibliophile in the tiny Quiet Please: Murder (1942), a rare Sanders star vehicle. In decline, he still managed fascinating work: Roberto Rossellini's Viaggio in Italia (1954) (Journey to Italy), and Mr. Freeze on the Batman TV series (1966-1968). Offscreen, Sanders also liked to cultivate a caddish image and was married four times. He committed suicide in 1972 by taking an overdose of barbiturates, leaving a note saying he was bored. Apparently, this had always been his intention.
